In light of the offer to replace an IFD440 with a 'free' refurbished IFD540....

What are the advantages of IFD540 with the Vantage display system vs the IFD440?

On the list for a Vantage upgrade.  We currently have an SR22 with dual IFD440, DFC90, NGT9000(panel mount) and PMA450B.

To take advantage of the offered IFD540 upgrade, we would need to replace the NGT9000 with a remote transponder, possibly an NGT9000R or an Avidyne SkyTrax600 series.

We would like to understand what would be gained by upgrading one of our IFD440 to a IFD540?

The only two obvious features are the larger screen and ability to display approach charts.

What else are we overlooking?

I have this same setup as you with dual 440s, NGT, DFC90 and PMA450b

You are not overlooking anything other than aesthetics, and preferences.

The Avidyne “dream” panel with 540/440 as it was once dubbed, does look cleaner and better.

But from a functional perspective, it’s essentially the same, which is why Avidyne allows the dual 440s.

Don’t forget, Approach plates will be on the Vantage MFD, and IFD1000 app.

You will be able to enter flight plans through the MFD with Vantage.

I personally would not swap the NGT9000 for something else, other than the Remote version. The NGT is great… especially with the “+” which removes Skywatch and give you nicely merged active traffic along with ADS-B traffic.

I think if someone was needing to/wanted to upgrade their transponder anyway, taking this deal would be worth it and a no brainer.

Already having the NGT, it’s a harder decision.
I am glad I was not offered it in some ways…that said, if I was, I would have likely done it!

As Erik said, it's functionally the same. I do not have a cirrus so I what I say could be wrong but after looking at the photos on avidyne's website, one advantage having the 540 would be using the larger screen on the 540 to view more of your flight path/surroundings if you use your MFD in TAWS mode, and visa versa. If you use the IFD100 app, you don't really benefit all that much in that regard. Looks like you'll get all the datablocks on the MFD that you would benefit from having the larger screen on the 540. So I guess it's aesthetics and possibly a slight increase in resale value at the end of the day.

I've looked at some of the differences and came up with:

540 allows certified TAWS vs. 440 FLTA.  Small difference IMHO.

540 will allow you to use the newer GDL69A box for SiriusXM Weather and Radio Control.  Vantage will likely be updated at some point to also accept the newer SXM radar.  Legacy XM products may eventually be phased out.  Not sure how much importance I place on this with Starlink options for weather and entertainment.

Vantage does not allow customizable checklists.  540 allows for decent size Customizable Checklists vs. the much smaller 440.  This is interesting, but I use a paper checklist.

540 will require a remote transponder.  Pretty big cost here.

It is pretty hard to justify, but the 540 sure looks nice.
