When the CMOS battery fails, the MFD does not know what the date and time is when it boots up, which are things it needs to know. But as I understand it, after booting up it connects to your GPS and knows to get the date and time from it instead. So I'm told - my CMOS battery still works. Replacing the CMOS battery will prevent the error message, so that's something.
