My Garmin pilot expired. As far as I know it was not going to work to transfer flt plans to the 540.
Looking for a new app to be able to create my flt plan at home and then transfer it to the 540.Rubber band option would be my choice. I do not want an app to fly with, I already have 2 gps s with all the info and dont like to fly looking at a phone or an I pad, and since I wont be flying with it I prefer not to pay for a subscription. |

Fltplan Go is free (at least now), and IMO they have made the most concerted effort to leverage the IFD series.
FlyQ from Seattle Avionics just dropped its V 2.4 which leverages the IFDs at the level of GPS, AHRS, and bidirectional FP transfer (when 10.2 comes out). They say they are going to do more, and that maybe will be Weather and/or Traffic from box to tablet. Both of these would suit your desire to transfer flt plans but are apps, and if you want something more custom, and are facile in writing code, Avidyne has made available an SDK to create your own functionality. There are some apps in the Android world, but I am not familiar. Edited by ddgates - 01 Oct 2016 at 9:31am |

If I understand the question correctly ... i.e. just create the flight plan at home and sync with the IFD540 in the aircraft ... then the simplest would likely be via the IFD100, once available, wouldn't it?

Most likely the IFD100 would be the best, but it depends on the OPs hardware and if Avidyne's attempt at an Android development partnership is successful. I wouldn't be willing to purchase new hardware just to transfer flight plans.
If you are simply wanting to transfer flight plans, you can also create them at home on the simulator, save them to a USB, then load them on the 540 via the USB. This will transfer ALL of the routes you have on your simulator and DELETE any existing routes on your 540 so you need to be careful doing this, but if you are just moving over the day's flight plan and you don't keep a list of stored flight plans, this could work easily. It is so fast to enter in flightplans de novo in the IFD, that being able to transfer flightplans in is not that much of a biggie.

I tend to agree if your flight plan is full of waypoints in the database. If it has a bunch of custom waypoints, then transferring is definitely faster.

The custom waypoints can also be "maintained" on the sim and transferred en-block to the IFD whenever the list changes, and then Orest's approach will work for flight plans with them too.

Making the flightplan in the sim, then putting them in an SD card and inserting the SD card in the IFD 540 to copy the flightplans, is this something that is currently working? Or we need to wait for the next software version?

Yes but with a USB stick, not an SD card.
There are 2 sim programs: 1) the "normal" sim which you use to enter or delete flight plans and waypoints, and 2) the "maintenance mode" sim which you use to upload/download data between the sim and the USB stick. Works in both directions so you can transfer from the IFD to the sim and vice versa. Just remember that the data (flight plan or waypoint) is completely replaced and not merged. |

I use FlyQ and love it. Not as feature rich as ForeFlight but does everything I need and it is super fast. I've tried about every app out there and stick with FlyQ because it works well and isn't astronomically expensive.

The other huge benefit to FlyQ is that it is hardware agnostic. * Orest |

Very true. I'm sure the Stratus is great but aviation is expensive enough, no need to pay $900 for a receiver. |

You don't. It is a separate program.
When you install the sim under Windows, 3 sim programs are created: IFD440 Simulator, IFD540 Simulator, and Maintenance Mode. The last one is the one you need to use to transfer waypoints and flight plans to/from a USB stick. BTW, the waypoint files have a name with the format BKyymmdd.002 and the flight plan (route) files have a name with the format BKyymmdd.003. If you create more than one file on the same day, the middle digit of the extension counts up, e.g. 002 becomes 012, 022, etc. You can also transfer settings this way and those files have an extension .001. So you can set up the IFD the way you want on the sim and then transfer the settings to the in-panel unit. It is also a good way to backup your settings, waypoints, and routes before any IFD maintenance work "just in case". Edited by chflyer - 04 Oct 2016 at 11:22am |
