It looks like my Avidyne USB key has died. It isn't recognized by my computer. I will need to get a new one for the next data update. Is there a limitation on the size of the USB drive that the IFD-540 can deal with, or will any size work?

I think the original is 8GB, in order to fit all the US data on it, including terrain, should there ever be an update to it. I may have some larger ones in the office that I can use.

Officially, the pilot's guide recommends a manufacturer and says it can be between 1 and 16GB.  In reality, it all depends on the power up response time of the USB stick.  I've used old and new USB sticks with no issues.  I don' think I've ever used a 16GB one (just because I don't have one around).  But, if that's what you have handy, it won't hurt to give it a try.  If there's a problem, you'll notice that the IFD doesn't recognize the presence of the USB stick at power up and won't go into maintenance mode.  If you can get it into maintenance mode using the memory stick, you'll probably be fine.

The USB memory stick  also needs to be FAT32 formatted.

You can do this from any windows computer

You can also create a Fat32 with a mac, just select that as the format from "Disk Utility" which is in your "Utilities" folder in Applications.

Select the proper drive (In this case the newly selected USB drive that you secured into the USB slot of your Mac its current title will be similar to this "Generic Flash Disk or something else if you previously have used it, and named it) on the left side under the "external" designation. DO NOT SELECT THE WRONG DRIVE.

You will select "erase" from the horizontal menu at the top of the window that appears after selecting Disk Utility.

Then you can create a name in the Name Window, (I usually create a drive titled AviJep119 in this months case- It means AvidyneJeppesenMonthYear, technique only).

AFter that select MS-DOS (FAT) in the format window, and then finally the "ERASE" button near the bottom right of the window.

AFter it is finished formatting, copy your desired files to the newly created Avidyne file installer disk you just created.

Works great, and it is less filling...(ah, sorry wrong joke)

Thanks for the information and tips.

I found the relevant note in the Pilot’s Guide. By the way, the link there doesn’t work anymore. I’m not sure that company even makes USB drives anymore, as their web site only talks of solutions and such, and doesn’t list any actual products.

My other drives are between 32 and 128GB, so I will get a smaller one from Amazon. They only seem to have the very cheap, 10 in a pack, no-name brands in the smaller sizes sizes.

However, I may not need one just yet. There was an issue with the Mac settings. My 2017 iMac didn’t see the drive in Finder when I inserted it, but said it was improperly ejected when I pulled it out. The Disk Utility did see it and indicated it was OK. The led me to go to the Finder preferences, and for some reason the External Disks checkbox had a dash in it, instead of a check mark. Once I clicked on it, it became an unchecked box, and a second click checked it and made the Avidyne stick visible again. Upon more experimentation, I found that you can “Remove from Sidebar” any item in Finder and that causes the dash in the preferences.

I don’t know how the disk was removed from the side bar, but all is well again with the original unit.

Does Avidyne still have some of these for sale? I might still want to have a backup laying around, just in case.

My airplane didn't come with the Avidyne USB drive (previous owner must have kept it. heh).  I ended up buying this thing off of amazon:

https://amzn.to/2MCYEZR

I REALLY like it since my new macbook only has USB-c ports. The thumbdrive is tiny, and has a USB-c connector on one side and the "normal" USB connector on the opposite side for the Avidyne.  It's also small enough I just keep it on my airplane keychain.

So far, its worked great.  It's not the "official" drive though..
