Here's a list of features you can expect with 10.1:

1.Standby comm monitor (needs associated HW mod)

2.Remote transponder control/display - this allows control and display of the upcoming Avidyne AXP322 remote transponder.

3.ARTCC out to 200nm - change in the Freq List and Nearest algorithm to extend the range of ARTCC freqs in the list (think high altitude aircraft flying in the jet airways)

4.Bluetooth & Wifi -  Bluetooth is 2-way comm with a properly paired external Bluetooth keyboard.  WiFi is initially a 1-way, streaming out of the IFD, capability to certain, to-be-named-later, software apps hosted on mobile/tablet devices.  The two-way capability will follow in trail.   This area will require separate STC approval from the FAA - we split that out of the main STC so as to not hold up the Release 10.1.0.0 STC for both the IFD540 and IFD440.

5.Single row FPL - provides the user with an option to collapse the vertical height of flight plan legs on the FPL to a single row.  This is especially useful in IFD440s where there is less vertical display space.

6.All vertical constraints shown and at proper geo spot - expands the current capability by now displaying all vertical contraints visually on the moving map, not just for the next waypoint.  And, if there is a vertical constraint, say, 5 nm prior to the waypoint, the depiction is at that 5nm point, not on the waypoint itself.

7.Option to pull down heading/track box on map - provides moving map setup option to remove that heading box from display.  This frees up (i.e. declutters) the map and might be helpful in IFD440 installations and even dual IFD installations where you have plenty of heading indications as is and may elect to turn it off on one of the displays.

8.Airspace aural alerting - adds the user option to turn on aural alerts about impending airspace.

9.Rubber band active leg - now permits you to rubber band the active leg in the flight plan.

10.ADS-B Wx - adds support for display of ADS-B In weather data from a MLB100 (new Avidyne box coming out at approximately the same time).

11.Helo TA and FLTA changes  - improves the altitude and distance triggers for Terrain Awareness and Forward Looking Terrain Alerts in rotary wing aircraft.  No changes to fixed wing, just a more operationally useful set of triggers for rotary wing.

12.Other helo optimizations - more helo specific changes such as adding an input from the collective to determine air/ground transitions for transponder state changes, and higher gains in the GPS that are operating underneath a spinning set of rotors, etc.

13.FLTA Inhibited/Off message now a blue CAS instead of yellow top strip - moved the FLTA messages off the top strip and into a standard Caution Advisory System message in bottom right corner.

14.Volume page is now touch control too - added touch control to the Audio tab on AUX page.

15.Headwind component on Air Data calculator - added a specific callout of headwind to that existing calculator page.

16.Fuel planner label changes - improved the labeling of the fields on the fuel planning calculator.

17.Departure time now takeoff time, not power on time - this applies consistency across all the calculator computations and displays.

18.FLTA alert during GPS re-acquisition bug fix - suppresses a Pull-Up, Pull-Up call that could be issued during GPS re-acquisition.

19.Info page realignment - makes some improvements to the map on the FMS INFO tab and to alignment of some of the data windows to be easier to read.

20.TOD when Direct-To IAF - changes the implementation to provide Top-of-Descent capability when proceeding direct to an Initial Approach Fix.

21.Mx Mode entry improvements - automatically jumps to the desired tab in Mx mode (e.g. Download Datalogs wakes up on that tab, Database updates wakes up on that tab, etc).

22.GPS software load better status indications - improves the field loadable software efficiency when updating GPS-related parts of the code in the future.

23.Obstacles now included in ESA - improved the Emergency Safe Altitude datablock to now also include obstacles in the calculation.

24.Checklists expanded from 30 steps to 50 steps

25.Easy way to reset checklists - added easy ways to reset entire checklist.

26. Scrollable datablocks - added the ability to touch scroll the right side datablocks which also means you can add a lot more datablocks than what you can see at any time.

27.Don't need baro input for Vertical speed required and wind vector datablocks.

28.5 custom users - added ability to have up to 5 different and uniquely nameable user setup configurations.  This applies to datablocks, map configurations, checklists, etc.

29.Ability to entry in Flight ID and Default VFR code when have a remote transponder - new entries in User Options page

30.500' callout on instrument final - added user option to turn on/off the aural "500" call out on final approach.

31.Sinking tabs option - added user option to allow the bottom strip of tabs to sink down out of view after a designated timeout.  This adds more display real estate and may be helpful especially in IFD440s.

32.Approach type in Nav Source knob label - added more detail to the Nav Source label in top right corner.  For example, when you are on a GPS-based approach, instead of just the generic "GPS" label, it will tell you the exact approach type the system is flying (e.g. "LPV" or "LNAV/VNAV" or "LNAV+V", etc)

33.VLOC nav source label stays yellow until morse code decoded - designed to give you a little more help in knowing if the system has properly Tuned-Identified-Monitored.

34.Sharp intercepts inside the FAF allowed - designed to allow one to still grab glideslope, glidepath deviations on a VFR sharp intercept inside the Final Approach Fix.

35.Activate approach changes - tries to improve the algorithm for activating approaches - both Vectors-to-Final transitions and entire published approach.

36.Activate VTF changes - ditto.

37.LP+V capability added - adds both LP+V approach types and allows Advisory Glideslope ("+V") to work even when system has no air data input.

38.Enable Missed changes - provides a user option to have the Missed Approach procedure automatically activate when passing the Missed Approach Point.

39.Check Navaid Identifier CAS changes - improves the trigger for that CAS message to also prompt you if you don't have proper nav freq in the system.

40.Airspace Ahead CAS message reduction - attempt at reducing nuisance alerts

41.Save/Restore capability added for Checklists, User Settings, Waypoints, Routes - allows you to save all that user setting data on a USB fob for use on other IFDs or later on the same/replaced IFD.

42.Direct To changes - some subtle improvements to Direct To behavior.

43.Nearest top of list behavior changes - changes behavior to Nearest list such that when you've been off the Nearest page for more than a few seconds, the cursor position will pop back up to top of list (i.e. nearest element)

44.Right DCK labeling change - adds more intuitive bottom right knob labeling for the 0.4% of you that actually read those labels.

45.Shadin Fuel Flows now all work - fixes a software issue in which some types of Shadin Fuel Flow systems did not properly display on the IFD.

46.Cursor centered mode on map - adds a new mode where the moving map will auto pan to be centered on whatever leg in the flight plan your cursor is on.  This allows for nice long route previewing.

47. Track CDI is now factory default - this was a Maintenance Mode setting that was being set wrong on a number of installations by installers in the field.

48.Full Nav triangle is now factory default - the Map page Nav declutter setting will default (from the factory) to full on.  You can still change the declutter setting yourselves and that user set value will remain across power cycles.

49.Able to take synchro input for heading - adds this new source of heading to the IFD.

50.All IFD440 changes supported - a lot of pages were reformatted to be better optimized for the IFD440 display real estate.  The software knows if its hosted on an IFD540 or an IFD440 at startup and reformats automatically.

51.Issues regarding CDI display indications that caused the Emergency AD are resolved

52.GPS tracking and algorithm enhancements

Many more "under the hood" changes and enhancements as well.

Hi Simpson-

Thanks for that comprehensive list of what to expect. Just a couple of quick questions.

1. Is the hardware mod required for the standby com monitor above and beyond running the additional wire to the audio panel, as specified in the installation manual?
2. Given our understanding that this software upgrade will be installable by an A&P, can we expect the software and documentation to be available on the sign-in portion of the dealer page, as with the 10.0.3 software upgrade?

Thanks,

Bob

On item #4:

Are all these items embargoed until a new STC is issued?  OR...

Does this mean that we'll get the official Avidyne bluetooth keyboard with our 10.1 update and it will be enabled for use?

Does "Wifi Out" mean that a Wx/Traffic stream is enabled in 10.1 to the as-yet unidentified co-conspirators (couldn't help the Nixon era reference).

If the WiFi out is not carrying Wx/Traffic, what is it sending?  And can we hope for ForeFlight compatibility since they are the biggest single player on the iPad?  I sort of doubt Garmin will play ball.

And of course:
Congratulations on running the FAA hunger games gauntlet!  The winner gets to play again...

Is there a revised Pilot's Guide for version 10.1 available for download?

Is there a revised Installation Manual?

You can download the draft PG and the approved IM for 10.1 here:

We'll replace the draft PG with the released version some time today.

No.  It's a PG re-do.  Virtually every page was affected.

For those folks who are registered, they should get a new hard copy from us in the mail, presuming you want one.

It sounds like (from the video) we have to wait for Avidyne to send us some hardware (USB fob and USB / micro SD adapter) before we can do the update.  If we have our own hardware, do we need to wait (can we download the software that presumably comes on the USB fob)?  Is there concern over non-tested hardware where you suggest waiting?  If we have to wait, what is the timeframe, package was ready and waiting and shipped when the news came out, in a week, few weeks, does it depend on anything else?

I was hoping I could have had it installed this morning to test out on this weekends trip, but that's not a big deal, but I'm heading out on a several week trip in a few weeks and would definitely like it by then and I'll need to coordinate to have this done.

We will post the software for download like we've done for the previous releases BUT, the update is gigantic and will bog down most people's data stream.  I think you'll need a large pipe to get the downloads in anything close to a reasonable time.   That's the principal reason we are mailing out the fobs with the updated software.

Along the same lines as the other questions, I'd like to know the following:

Will our dealers have to request the 10.1 update? or will Avidyne send them out automatically to dealers?

Will every single 540 owner get an update kit? or will dealers get one kit and use it for all of their customers?

The update kits are sent to the dealers, call them to place an order. Avidyne covers the installation time for doing the update as well.

Experimental customers, contact us directly and we will send the kits to you.

Just curious - how gigantic?  I have an almost 90 MBPS downstream.  If you zip it and post on SFTP we could download securely.  I'd be happy to supply my shop with the files, fobs, and micro SD.

And, I think we're all kind of experimental customers, aren't we...

(I hope now that you've certified you can appreciate my good natured sense of humor)

Very funny, Mystic.  But probably very accurate too.  That's why I suggested an FTP download; to get the HTTP server out of the way.  Or, actually, dropbox or some similar service that has access to large servers might work even better.

Or, wait for UPS delivery of a USB stick and a microSD card.  Sigh...  so primitive.

And a new warranty sticker.  You have to destroy the warranty label to access the microSD card in the unit, and the placard says "Unit not airworthy if seal broken."

I don't know how I would download a new warranty sticker.

I was talking to my avionics shop yesterday, apparently in similar circumstances with other equipment they would allow the shop to reprint a label from a soft copy of a master. Of course it would be just a regular paper one, rather than a fancy foil one.

So-called "Void" stickers are special. When you peel them up, it leaves behind the word VOID a bunch of times in the adhesive. If these were easy to reproduce in the field, they would have no reason to exist in the first place.

There is mention that 10.1.0.0 approval is an STC, so that will mean completing and mailing off a 337 with IA signoff, not just an A&P log entry, correct? Has the STC reference been published?

No, I've read here that it is a sign-off only.

I suspect that the STC is for the 440 incl 10.1 software. If 10.1 approval on the 540 is via a separate STC from the original 540 STC, then that would need 337 form & IA. An STC cannot be documented via simple A&P log entry.

Ito's a software update for the 540s.  Doesn't require a 337, but maybe a new printed supplement.

The update packs are starting to ship today. We recommend calling your dealer to schedule the update.

Forgive me, but I'm still not clear on just who is authorized to install this update.  Can we download and install it ourselves like we did the last one?  Or are we required to have our avionics shops do it and sign it off?

I'm not afraid of big files and lengthy update processes.  Many of us have the bandwidth and tech ability to do it ourselves.

This update has to be done by an Avidyne dealer and it does require a sign off.

**EDIT** Correction, this can be done by anyone who has logbook sign off authority, however, we highly recommend that an Avidyne dealer does this due to the complexity.

In most cases (including this one, as far as I can tell) changing the operating software of a piece of avionics is considered an alteration, and not preventive maintenance.  As such, it is outside the legal authority of the typical pilot/owner and must be done by a qualified individual or facility.

The type of alteration tends to be "minor alteration" which means that an A&P is legally qualified, although most A&Ps are not avionics technicians, and shy away from large download files and other such things.

An avionics shop (and especially an Avidyne dealer) is in the best position to have the combination of legal authority and technical expertise to get the job done right.

If you are able to obtain a kit, then you might be able to do the tech-type heavy lifting while legally working under the supervision of your local A&P for the signoff.

Everything I've read indicates that the kit includes a new warranty sticker (the void-if-removed sticker), which is not available for download.

The PC sim has been updated with the new features of 10.1. It can be downloaded here: http://www.avidyne.com/products/ifd540/demo-sim-signup.asp

Delete the old version of the simulator before downloading this new one. This new update also has the 440 simulator on it as well.

What does it take to have the wind/direction/speed to become active in the Datablock?  In the calculator section of the Utility tab, my altitude and heading self populates.  I have to fill in the CAS and OAT fields and it then gives me the TAS and Winds.  The Datablock on my MAP page is still blank, however.

Yes, I've noticed this issue also.
The 10.1 software promised...

"27.Don't need baro input for Vertical speed required and wind vector "

I'm seeing the Vertical Speed data, but the Wind Vector Datablock is blank.
Is an Air Data Computer still required for this function, as "Item 27", above, seemed to indicate that it wasn't?

That was my mistake in the Release notes.  Wind Vector computation takes more than just baro or GPS derived vertical speed.    Here's what's required for inputs to get the wind vector datablock to populate:

GPS (Mag Var looked up based on position, Velocity)

Air Data (True Airspeed)

Magnetic Heading

Vertical Velocity (From GPS or From Air Data Computer)

The only required external inputs are TAS and Mag Heading.  I will edit the pilot guides to reflect this.

Without an Air Data Computer, is it possible that in a future release we could enter the True Airspeed manually, in order to get the Winds Datablock to populate?  I believe everything else is supplied in my aircraft.

Yes, I'll add it to the database for potential future inclusion.

Now that my 540/340/MLB100 is fully upgraded and configured, it is really better than sliced bread!  Wow, what a pleasure to fly.

However, I am still having Audio Panel (AMX240) issues:

     1. Standby Monitoring of Comm-1.  I get the blue Rx lights, have checked audio levels (and squelch- On), but no audio on Comm-1 Standby (use SL30 for Comm-2).  Is this a "hard wiring" issue between 240 and 540?

     2.  Is there a way to wire TAS6XX input to Audio Panel 240 so that Comm audio (ATC or Tower) is not blocked by incoming TAS Audio warnings? eg. like Blue Tooth music?  Presenly, my TAS605 audio target warnings (especially annoying on the ground) block Tower/Gnd Comm audio, and the TAS-mute button has to be continuously pushed.  (Also, the Mute button on 240 was not wired to Mute the TAS - would this accomplish same?).

Thanks for any advice.

Tom W.

The Standby Monitoring requires dedicated wiring between the 540 and 240

I believe the certification requirements have a priority scheme for audio transmittal and TAS has a high priority
