I really like FF. It has a better-integrated set of features, and more of them, than its competitors.
But damn it's taking them a long time to support display of ADS-B data from the IFD. https://foreflight.com/campaigns/9-5/

Avidyne told me (now this was a few years ago) that they would never allow data from an uncertified ADSB source for display on an IFD. Has something changed?

Right now, ForeFlight doesn't support ADS-B Weather and Traffic coming from the IFD (when connected to an ADS-B receiver like the SkyTrax100). The data is in the wifi stream and other apps have been taking advantage of it.

And they won't. This is the other way around, panel mount ADS-B populating an portable. * Orest |

I realllllly want to like FlyQ. But it's just not intuitive to me, and it's missing a lot of functionality compared to FF. Every so often I fire it up and try it again, just to see if I like it any better. (I keep buying it just to support competition.)

I realllllly have to like FlyQ. I have "lifetime" data for it, and according to their setup I will live until December, 2198.

So why is it that traffic and weather data from the Stratus2s won't ever be displayed on the IFD540? I am now getting flight plans shipped to the IFD from my ipad. This is also a non certified device. At this point there must be thousands of these Stratus units in service, their behavior and reliability should be well understood and I'm guessing the data format on the wifi network is also well known..

Specifically what functionality does FF have that FlyQ does not?

The thing I like best about Fly Q is the wind advisor. However at one time today I was looking at METARs that were dated January. I've noticed things like that before. really old weather even when using the Stratus.

I was told that ther is politics involved. Avidyne is indeed streaming adsb data but ForeFlight is not picking it up. Evidentially ForeFlight owns 33%of Stratus and want to push those boxes instead. Need to email ForeFlight and let them know we expect this to be allowed.

The more that request this, the sooner it will happen.

Politics and a conflict of business interests that what I've been told. ForeFlight owns 33% of Stratus. If they allow the Avidyne ADSB data into the iPad it significantly decreases the need for the Stratus 2S box they get $900 for.
The best the IFD fleet can do is email ForeFlight and pipe up asking them to remove the block and allow the ADSB data to flow into the ForeFlight App. I'm sure the big G flexed its muscles and Foreflight caved which is why the GTN series gets the full data stream. Email ForeFlight! I did. |
