Hope the link works.

The 540 signal moves around choosing different satellites all the time
The Garmin 796 has solid signal

Is this how is meant to be?

The display of actual GPS satellites (bars) is just informational. It will vary from device to device depending on the signal thresholds and refresh timing they use to decide what to display.

You have a solid lock, as shown on the screen, and that is all that matters.

I find that annoying too. I think what is happening is that the Avidyne shows only the satellites it is getting signal from whereas other devices show all the satellites that should be in view at any given time. So the Avidyne display jumps around because satellites get inserted and dropped every time the display refreshes.

This is what a GPS display looks like on my phone - notice the slots with no signal. On the IFD those slots would be closed up, but because the unreceived satellites change from second to second it creates a constantly moving display. The drawback to showing satellites without signal is that there may not be room to show all the satellites in view at one time.
