Hi David,
We may be in the same boat.  Early adopters.  I haven't seen an explanation of why the software is delayed or what the current anticipated release date is.  I watch another blog, other avionics producers give much better explanations of software delay issues.  Avidyne is not alone in suffering through the development process.  I have a 605 installed, and have paid for the "A" functionality.  If I had known it would take this long, I might have made a different choice.  Now, there seem to be other options hitting the market.

I agree.  I think the 605 is price adjusted a better product, and the "A" piece makes it better yet, BUT, as an Avidyne early adopter who waited X years for a DFC90 (which won't be fulfilled I think ever), X years for the IFD to come to market, and then X years for this TAS fulfillment, it seems like a repetitive theme, and as one who has limited years remaining in my flying career, your point is well taken.

I think Avidyne would be better served if they were more transparent.  If the FAA is slow at the approval process, that should be revealed.  If it is a technical problem, we can understand that as well.  If corporate decides it is a low priority, well maybe they don't want to tell us that.  From my point of view, I just would like to know where we stand in this process.  When or why not.

I suspect it is internal (Avidyne) resource availability.  I don't think they have the software done.

 I don't think the TAS-A software is sitting on an FAA desk somewhere...but I could be wrong.

Since they won't be specific on the timeline other than "later this year", I suspect you are correct.
I am surprised and disappointed.  Very poor decision for Avidyne.

More transparent? I don't know of another avionics manufacturer on the market that has a forum like the one you are on today. This is a direct channel to some senior individuals at Avidyne, no other avionics company gives you that kind of access.

If anything we are too transparent. You will notice that we are no longer giving expected due dates of software for other products or what features are to be included in those releases. 

We are working on completing the software to the TAS "A". The hardware is done and certified, isn't that a step in the right direction? If we had unlimited resources and could stop time, we would have the "A" to you tomorrow. Your frustrations aren't going unheard, we are working to bring you the completed TAS "A" as soon as we can.

Very wise.  There are so many twists and turns in the certification process that public predictions essentially never play out positively.  On the other hand...

That is more of a tightrope walk.  Naturally you want to let your potential customers know that you may soon have a product for them to consider.  On the other hand, you don't want to tip off your competition and you don't want to create so much anticipation that people get disappointed if there are delays.  It really ends up not mattering if the delays are justified or not.

I think that Avidyne is doing a very good job at this.  I see a few instances where I might have elected to say less than they have said, but if it doesn't go to plan I will be there to look on the bright side and say that they offered more information than anybody else in the industry.

In my experience, they are as transparent as it gets.

I too was a very early adopter (2 x IFD 540s, AXP340, 605A, MLB100) and while I can certainly feel with the rest of you on the delays (ie my 605A) I do think that Avidyne has done a fantastic job on keeping everyone up to date on things. 

Avidyne does not have the deep pockets that some of the others have and had I known how long it would take to get everything when I signed on the line, I would still do it all over again today. 

They are a smaller company, but I have always liked Avidyne. It started with my Cirrus', then my Meridian (very early R9 adopter) and now my Seneca. Great equipment and fair prices were (and are) worth the wait in my mind.

I can understand that someone who has had other good experiences of Avidyne might feel that.  

If Garmin messed up one product I would probably cut them some slack, after many, many years of happy Garmin ownership.  (Actually, I think that is the situation with Garmin Pilot.)

But when your only experience of the company is a product that they sold you on a promise that remains unfulfilled many years later, you don't have that good experience to fall back on.  You just wish you had stuck with Garmin.

I guess I just went into this with the thought that it would take much longer than initially anticipated. BUT - I have a lot of Garmin equipment including their 750s in our jet and helicopter...I'm still glad I waited!
