From page 3-30 of the current 540 draft manual:

"Taxi Charts

If a published procedure was used via the Charts tab for the landing airport, the display chart will automatically switch over to the airfield diagram during post-landing roll out. Your ownship position on the airfield diagram chart will be displayed as an aid in surface navigation."

Question: Can anyone think of a reason the 540 shouldn't automatically switch to the airfield diagram (if one is available) ANYTIME the aircraft is below flying speed, whether or not it is at the end of flying a published procedure (at startup and after landing)?  It seem to me that it only makes sense to view ground data when on the ground.  If the user wants the Map then tap the Map button or lift off again.

Thoughts??

Agree.

IIRC the Aspen MFDs do that when <30 kts speed.

The same could be said about approach plates.  Anytime an approach is added to the FMS, the Chart tab should display that chart without the user loading it.

Absolutely.

Yes, I wouldn't mind it if ONE of my IFDs would jump to the local chart when on ground during a startup event or an on ground landing event.  Even if a chart was being displayed or not.

I guess provided you have up-to-date charts since some people are not buying charts.

I wouldn't want both to change, as such I'd like to choose which one changed.

I agree with both suggestions - automatically load the destination airport in the charts tab - too confusing and frustrating to have to dial in the airport to get the charts. Sure I can load a proc, but why not have the charts page pre-populated. Likewise on the taxi diagram - something my FlyQ does automatically, although it only does this with plated airport diagrams and not all diagrams like are available on the 540.

Admin Group, your thoughts??

This would be a very cool feature:  When the destination airport was selected, the charts for that airport would be loaded into the selection box automatically, and would be available for selection once the "Charts" feature was activated.  Perhaps the airport chart would be there first...

Aspen's MFD has an option to automagically display the taxi diagram when airspeed drops below 30 KTS.

I find the fact that you have to manually change the airport identifier and then select an approach from the Charts tab when you already have a destination and approach loaded in the FMS one of the few non-intuitive elements of the IFD540 UI.

There is a shortcut to the plate from the FMS page I believe though but somehow thats not the workflow I use intuitively.

Yep, just press the chart icon on the destination airport waypoint.

There is also a PASTE KXXX soft key, which will fill in with the arrival airport name, once enroute.

Let's get back to the original question, "Can anyone think of a reason the 540 shouldn't automatically switch to the airfield diagram (if one is available) ANYTIME the aircraft is below flying speed, whether or not it is at the end of flying a published procedure (at startup and after landing)? "

No, can't think of a reason on arrival, but not necessarily on departure. You may wish to keep a SID as the active chart, even while taxiing.

+1 on this entire thread.  I would like to have taxi diagrams show automatically whether I loaded an approach plate or not.  The reality of flying for me is that I rarely need an approach plate but I always have to taxi after landing.

I have also wished that I could load an approach on the FMS screen and have that plate preselected on the Map/Charts page.  At a minimum have the destination airport preloaded on the Charts selection page.

I think it is better the way it happens now, having PASTE KXXX (your destination usually) as a soft key. You may be looking at another airport, perhaps as an alternate. I wouldn't want that work in progress to disappear when you load an approach. With just one extra keystroke, you have a choice.

My vote would be to have a selectable option to have the airport taxi diagram automagically pop up on the runway as you decel through 30 KTS.

Orest's preference could still go forward, as could other options.
