It's probably appropriate to talk about this now.   After weeks of heavy duty discussions and lobbying with various parts of the FAA, we appear to be very close to displaying ADS-B traffic on the IFD540 and IFD440.

If all continues to go well, this will NOT require a new software load beyond Release 10.1.1.0 which *should* be available in the next 2 weeks or so.

As for a little more background for those who care or understand some of the organization of the FAA, we convinced the Small Aircraft Directorate in Kansas City and the AIR-130 group at the DC FAA Headquarters that it would be safer and smarter to start allowing ADS-B traffic display on the IFDs now.  They in turn have communicated their new position to the Boston cert office (ACO) that handles our day-to-day operations and certification.  So now we're knocking out the tactical operations to make this happen in the next 2ish weeks to include updating the IFD-MLB100 Service Information Letter and the IFD Installation Manual, adding a new selection for MLB100 traffic in the IFD setup pages.

This version of ADS-B traffic will display conventional traffic icons and not the new ADS-B traffic icons and may only work with MLB100 ADS-B In Receivers but new symbology and more ADS-B In receiver support is coming with Release 10.2 in a few months.

Germane reminder. Those of us who have TAS systems and MLB 100 installs would have wired MLB WX only, and are thus still waiting on TAS/ADS-B integration for the full picture.

Hope this is a short follow on.

As a pilot with the MLB100 already installed, I don't understand the waiting.   Just prewire both interfaces (RS-232 and ARINC 429) and you are fully prepared.  If they end up not using one of them, you just turn off that input in the IFD config screens.

Even if you are simply waiting for delivery of the unit, go ahead and do the wiring if the plane is ready.  The unit can bolt in later in a matter of minutes.

Jake - In addition to ADS-B formatted TIS-B traffic for display on the IFD540/440, will this software version of the MLB100 transmit TIS-A format traffic that can be automatically displayed by legacy equipment, including an Aspen PFD?

No. the MLB100 does not have the capability to transmit TIS-A since it is broadcasted on a different frequency than ADS-B TIS-B.

I don't think I was clear.  I understand that the MLB does not transmit at all.

My question is if the MLB will SEND TIS-A traffic data to be displayed on an Aspen PFD on the 429 bus.  TIS-A is the traffic standard accepted by almost every cockpit display.  ADS-B-formatted traffic data is usually specific to the display.  Units such as Freeflight output BOTH.

ADS TIS-B is sent on both 978 & 1090.

The old standard "TIS" (there is actually no TIS-A) is transmitted on 1090, embedded in secondary radar interrogation pulses. 

ADS-B units, including the MLB, are not capable of receiving that information. You can only receive that information with Mode S transponders, that support that.

I think I understand what Jeff is asking, and the answer is yes.  The MLB100 will output traffic (ADS-B traffic) as ARINC 429 data, and most displays will perceive that as TIS traffic.

So in that respect, yes, the MLB/MLX units output "TIS-A" look-alike traffic data that can be accessed on most displays.

The MLB100 outputs traffic using ARINC 735 over ARINC 429 which the Aspen accepts.  This is much more accurate and allows more targets than the old TIS-A spec over ARINC 429 could do.

I was more differentiating the 978 vs 1090 facility.

But yes indeed, SSR interrogations and data are transmitted on 1030 to transponders, and transponders reply by transmitting on 1090.
