Now that we know how to upload images we can post our upgrade photos.

Here's our Cessna 172 before the upgrade.  It is stock NAV II package except that the ADF indicator was replaced by the engine monitor.

The main purpose of the upgrade was to get rid of the KLN 89B.  We decided to go with the IFD 540 because if we removed the KLN 89B, one COM radio, and the INOP ADF we'd have enough space for it.  And we liked the features, or at least those we knew about - it was a fairly early pre-order.

We eventually decided to replace the audio panel and transponder as well, and to add an Icarus SAM roll steering converter.

There's an intermediate stage which perhaps aircraft owners should not see:

But the result was worth the wait (and the cost):

The Icarus SAM is on top,  It has a rather small readout and lots of extra capabilities which we mostly don't use.  But it provides roll steering which is very nice.

Below it is the AMX 240 audio panel.  I wrote about why we chose it elsewhere on this forum.

Next is the mighty IFD 540.  It looks amazing just sitting there.  It is connected to the KI 209a indicator which was left from the previous installation.  The old annunciator was replaced with a blank panel.

Below that is the KX 155A.  This was the original COM 1 radio.  We swapped the KI 208 for a KI 209 so that it would still have glide slope.  We don't ever expect the IFD to fail but if it does we can still fly to a VOR and follow an ILS.  Redundancy is an IFR pilot's friend.

The next item is the AXP 340 transponder.  The old KT 76C had developed problems twice in the three years we had the plane so I wanted it to be gone.  This gives us ADS-B out, and the plane is now 2020 compliant.  We currently use Foreflight and a Stratus 2 for ADS-B in.

On the bottom is the KAP 140 single-axis autopilot.

The displays on the engine monitor and COM 2 radio look chopped in this photograph because it was taken at a high shutter speed, but they actually are fine.

Interesting sequences, so here is my story:  First upgrade in 2008, with Ga***n equipment, and you can see what the wiring entailed - and it took over 3 weeks.  On July 27m, 2015, my upgrade to the IFD 540, 440 and transponder went in smoothly within 5 days, including new transponder wiring and check out.

Here is our C172M after the complete panel upgrade. In addition to the IFD 540 we added:
Avidyne AXP 340 Mode S ADS-B transponder
PS Engineering PMA 450 Audio panel
Garmin GNC 255A Nav/Comm
Aspen EFD 1000 Pro EFIS
S-Tec System 30 autopilot
JPI EDM 900 Primary engine monitor
ACK E-08 406mhz elt

When the airplane fund gets flush again we will add another Aspen EFD 1000 Pro and an Avidyne MLB 100 datalink computer. We have reserved a new N number and had it put on the new panel but will probably wait until painting the airplane to change it.

Skihpilotmd, I really like the updated layout of the 84 and later A36 Bonanzas over the center yoke my 85 F33A has.  As much as I try to convince myself that the single throwover yoke is a good setup, every time I see a nice panel like yours brings me back to reality.  There is no real good way to move the IFDs into the center of the panel without major construction and adding a JPI930 or similar.

I'm back up and flying, here's a picture of the panel now.  I've taken out the the Garmin 155XL, a KX155A, KT76A, and inop radar altimeter.  I've added a engine monitor, fuel flow, IFD540, AXP340, iFly700, an android tablet running iFly software, antenna splitter, backup vacuum, low vac light, and a fuse panel to run the EI equipment and power a custom center console with power jacks and holders for tablets for the kids.  Next up is a new audio panel and removing the inop clock, I've got several other compliant timers so I don't need a dedicated one.

The aircraft is a 1980 A36.  The panel now consists of:

2 IFD 540s

AMX240 Audio Panel

AXP340 ADS B transponder

MLB100

TAS 605

Evolution 2000

CoGuardian 452

Aerospace Logic Clock CO200K

Aerospace Logic Fuel Gauge -FL 204

I did this work in January of 2015 and really like the way it came out!  Happy to answer any questions on or off line.
