I made my first flight with my new avionics! As far as I can tell, the equipment works perfectly, although the pilot could stand some improvement.

One thing I could not do was get the unit into VOR mode. I could tune the frequency, and I could make the VOR part of the flight plan, but no matter how I tried, I could only get modes of GPS or OBS in the top right corner. I couldn't make it go into VOR mode in the plane, and I can't figure it out from the pilot's guide either.

I was able to put an ILS in the flight plan and I saw GPS->VLOC during vectors to final, and I got the ILS in VLOC mode through automatic switching.

How do I tune and fly to a plain old VOR?

Turn the top right knob until you see 'VLOC'

I could have sworn that I tried that, but maybe I didn't.  Maybe I just pushed it a million times.

I think there is a setting in the maintenance mode where you choose which modes are available via the upper right knob. Maybe that's your issue - or maybe I'm way off base...?

I would suspect you were pushing that knob as that is what would continually switch from GPS to OBS.  As was suggested, turning that knob should put you in VOR mode.

Are there any other requirements for VLOC mode?  Does the unit need to actually be receiving the station?  Code identified? Any other hidden gotchas?
