All of the Avidyne 2014 Oshkosh announcements are public (no surprise announcements held back). By way of summary:

  1. The IFD540 is certified and shipping.  Some initial installs are already complete.   Avidyne Sales should be reaching out to early pre-buy folks in the very near future if not already done so to coordinate shipping logistics.
  2. The IFD540 is shipping with a hardware-certified internal WiFi and BlueTooth transceiver.   A future software release will turn on those functions for use in the cockpit.
  3. International certifications of the IFD540 will begin shortly.
  4. The AXP340 ADS-B Out Mode S Transponder is certified and shipping.
  5. The AMP240 Audio panel is certified and shipping.
  6. Release 9.3 (SynVis included) of the R9 system is certified and shipping.
  7. This year represents the 20th anniversary of Avidyne.
  8. The IFD440 development is in great shape.  We're flying the units in our flight test aircraft and expect to have cert before the end of 2014.
  9. The Avidyne servo project is moving along at a slow but deliberate pace.  When done, that will facilitate a number of new autopilot aircraft certs.
  10. The TAS-A product is nearing completion.  When completed, that will satisfy the ADS-B In part of the product line.

Steve:

Thanks for the update.  Eager to get shipment arranged and get the 540s in my panel.

Judging by your post, I am guessing that the add-on TAS-605A I purchased and will install with the 540s won't have ADS-B enabled.  Will it have to return to factory for enablement?

I've been told that my "free" upgrade of TAS605 -> TAS605A will necessitate a trip to the factory. I'm not holding my breath on when it will be available, but it is not that critical. At that point, to take full advantage of it, I will need to be ADS-B out compliant.

I just left Oshkosh (after a 24 hour touch and go visit).   Seemed like pretty good buzz around the Avidyne stack.

Enjoyed talking to a bunch of pre-buy folks and some newly interested people.   Got some good feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Really enjoyed watching a few Garmin sales reps playing with the Avidyne stack.

Enjoyed playing with the BK KSN770 even more - yikes that was a tough box and not one that I heard anybody have positive feedback about.

Got gobs of inquiries about the TAS-A units, a more complete ADS-B solution, and wifi functionality, not to mention the multitude of "when can I get my 540 unit?" and "when will the 440 be done?" questions.

As for the TAS-A upgrade questions above, I'm not sure I follow the "free" upgrade line (the upgrade price of a TAS to a TAS-A is $2K) and yes, most TAS units will need to come back to the factory for an internal hardware upgrade as part of that upgrade.  At this point, I'm estimating a late fall availability for the TAS-A units.

Jake:

Does that mean that a 605A bought TODAY will have to come back?

David,

Yes, a TAS unit bought today, will still need to come  back to factory for the TAS-A upgrade.  That TAS-A hardware is going through cert now and therefore, isn't part of today's shipping TAS.
