I notice that there are no markings on the volume knob. Is that because the knob is one of those free wheeling software driven ones, that can't give a relative volume level by its position?

If so, that would be unfortunate. Being able to check the volume level, to ensure it has not been reduced can be critical.

You can see the volume level by pressing AUX page function key and look on the Audio tab to see the audio volume level.

Yes, you can also twiddle the knob back and forth, and you'll get a momentary volume bar below the freq. But, at a glance at the panel, it would not be visible.

FEATURE REQUEST

I'm wondering if there could be a setting to show a visible indication on the screen, if and only if, the volume is below a certain set threshold. One might turn it down momentarily, to make a phone call, or whatever. The danger is in forgetting to reset it.

The indicator might look like this:

Awesome idea.  More than once I've turned the volume down for some distraction, and discovered too-long later that I forgot...

Yah, that's another good idea.  I'll add this one to the list of potential future feature adds.

Thanks!

You can also press the volume knob and see a scale.

Well George is technically correct but that is a bug that will get resolved at some point.

It that a "bug" just in the simulator implementation, or in the unit software itself?

It's an actual bug.  The push action is to turn squelch on/off.  I am not asking to know the volume of the com and nav settings when I'm turning squelch on/off.

It's a low priority bug and may not get resolved prior to initial cert.

Just a thought, might it be made a feature?

Short press = volume bar

longer press = squelch on/off

I think that is a good idea.

I don't like that idea.  I'm well-trained by my GNS430 that a short-press is the squelch defeat.  I'd bet a few hundred or thousand other pilots out there probably are, too, and would be discombobulated by different behavior.

Mystic,

That is a consideration. Well, it could be a short press/release for sq defeat, and a long press for a 10 sec appearance of the the volume indicator.

It was just a thought. I think if we can a visual LOW VOLUME warning, it won't be as important.

Suppose the short press just happens to display the volume, while toggling the squelch mode (which I infer is the GNS430 behavior, since it's been 10 years since I've flown with one).

One could double-press the button to get *only* the volume display.

On my mechanical knobs devices, I still end up *twisting* them to figure out where the volume is set when the silence becomes disconcerting.  And I always wonder "where did I end up?"  So if this happens a second time, I usually make a radio check.  A visual display (that I can remember as "aha, that's the right level!") in any form is good.

On any radio that I have used, a momentary defeat of the squelch provides an aural indication of volume level. I do not see a great need for an additional visual indicator that requires a button push to be activated. A visual indicator that was present at all times, but used negligible display space could be useful.

I'm kind of impressed and surprised there is this much interest in this particular feature.  As a minimum, it has certainly elevated the topic to be high on the next release feature discussion we'll have internally about 4 1/2 minutes after we get the initial TSO/STC.

Well, then that IS a good thing.

I have been burned by this once, hence my interest.

If the knobs are mechanical, just paint (or decal) a small indicator on the knob. Done. I did this on our SL-30, which does not have an indicator on its mechanical knob, the 430W does.

Of course, most new units have software driven knobs, hence the potential problem.

I've also experienced this problem.  Need a way to know volume level at a glance.
