Will the IFD540 have the ability to program a user-point orbit (hold), and will it have remote (i.e. computer) upload of flight plan capability?

Check p2-13 of the pilot guide for instructions ... It appears the answer to your hold question is yes.

Yes, you can create a hold on any waypoint in the system.

Remote upload of flight plans is a deferred feature - it is not in the initial release but we do plan to add it to a later release.

Steve, what's the word on compatibility with the Aspen "Connected Panel" for first release?  I am counting on this functionality.

Aspen Connected Panel support is not in the initial release.  We couldn't find any way for this to work without software or hardware mods to the non-Avidyne equipment and that would adversely affect the plug-and-play approach that we focused on for initial release.

We're still big fans of cockpit connectivity but for the initial release, it's all about plug-and-play.

The pilot's guide says holds can be created from user waypoints, but not radial crossings (because it needs a lat long position).  A user waypoint can be created using radial crossings (rad/rad).  My questions is, If I'd like to hold at a radial crossing such as the one in the VOR-B at WJF, can I create a rad/rad waypoint then create a hold from that waypoint or will that user waypoint not work because it's not associated with a lat long?  Does the IFD create the lat/long in the background for rad/rad waypoints?  If I can create the waypoint then the hold, why couldn't I create a hold from rad/rad letting the IFD figure out the lat long?  Is this a feature not in the initial release or something not planned on being implemented?

Yes, you can create a rad/rad user waypoint and insert a hold at that waypoint. That's part of the initial release.

Do you plan on allowing holds directly from rad/rad in future releases having the IFD connect the dots behind the scenes?

I'm not sure I understand the request.     We can create a user waypoint using the Radial/Radial method.    And if that user waypoint is added to a flight plan, you can create a hold off of that.

Is that different from what you are asking?

Perhaps my question doesn't make sense and I don't realize it because I'm not in front of the unit.  I was thinking that you can't currently create a hold using rad/rad, but instead there is a workaround where you can create user waypoint from rad/rad, add that new waypoint to the flight plan, then create a hold from that waypoint.  I was wondering if creating a hold directly from rad/rad was a future release candidate so we wouldn't have to do the work around.  One way to create a hold is to select a waypoint in the flight plan then add a hold - this method would require creating the waypoint and adding it to the flight plan so it is the same action as the work around.  However, the manual says you can insert a hold flight plan leg (last paragraph of creating a holding pattern).  The manual doesn't state what happens after you insert a hold flight plan leg, but I assume you have to establish a location to hold from.  It would be nice to be able to select rad/rad and create the hold directly from that menu instead of using the work around.  It wouldn't create a new capability, but it would add an additional way to create a hold that would follow intuitively what I'm trying to do - insert a hold in the flight plan at the intersection of two radials.

If the simulator/trainer was available, this might be a lot clearer.  (Hint, hint!  :-) )

I will add the hold feature request to the future candidate list but either I don't really understand the request or it's not something would likely fight its way into a future release when compared to all other contenders.

If you've gone to the trouble of creating a rad/rad waypoint, then making a hold from it in the flight plan is childs play.

I think MysticCobra  (hard to think of a cooler username....) makes a good point - try it on the sim (or real box) and see for yourself if you agree with the simplicity.   Any yes, we're working on a release date of the sim that beats TSO/STC date - no promises but I think we'll be successful there.
