Both my IFD540 & IFD440 indicated overheat messages about 3.5 hrs into a flight yesterday. The flight was at FL100 with outside temps not far above freezing and I occasionally needed to add heat in the cabin, so I was very surprised. First indication was on the IFD440 (lower unit). I decided to turn it off for a bit to let it cool and the message didn‘t reappear after restart. But just a few minutes later the IFD540 gave the same message. Turning it off for a few minutes also got rid of the message, but the current gps waypoint indication on my Sandel HSI kept jumping between previous waypoint and current waypoint, even though previous wpt was some distance behind. Never had this happen in 3-4 years with the boxes despite operating in >35C OATs. I have a blower installed and verified that it is still operational, although it is now quite old. 10.2.3.1 installed in June. Any chance that software changes are causing the elements to operate at higher temps? Anyone else see this? ------------- Vince |

A couple of year ago, when operating at a high enough altitude that I needed cabin heat, my #1 IFD presented a yellow caution for overheat, so I shut it down. At about the same time the cabin was getting too hot anyway, so I turned down the heat. I turned the IFD back on after 15 minutes, and never have had a repeat. I would have replaced the avionics fan as a next step, had it been been a repeating problem. Hopefully, your own experience will be a one-off too. I do think the overheat indicates the cooling of the stack could be better, and no doubt there are ways to make it so. I just haven't been inclined to spend the money until experience dictates it.

You might want to check that your cabin and defrost ducts are not leaking behind the panel. Did you use the defrost? Is your defrost control damper leaking even when in the off position?
