I am a fairly new to the Avidyne community. Got my IFD440 two years ago but used it as a direct replacement for GNS430W, without trying to understand its native functionality better.

I now am ready to dive deeper. I see references to a PC simulator everywhere (for example here: https://www.avidyne.com/news/press.asp?release=319) but I only see an ipad download link on the avidyne.com. Since I do not use Apple devices, I would like to get the sim on my PC. How can I get it?

Thanks
Miro

The PC version is freely available, but for some unknown reason, Avidyne keeps it in the basement in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard".

The website to download it from is here (and I don't know how you'd find this link if someone didn't tell you about it):   https://www.avidyne.com/products/ifd/demo-sim-login.asp" rel="nofollow - https://www.avidyne.com/products/ifd/demo-sim-login.asp

You need a userID and password to get to the download link.  I was emailed a generic one from Avidyne ages ago, but I don't think has ever been publicly posted here, so I'm not going to be the first to do it.  That page now has a link to request a UserID and Password, which I think is different from how it was when I downloaded the software, so maybe that will work for you.

Maybe Steve can get it moved out in the open onto this page, where it belongs:   https://avidynetraining.com/free-tools" rel="nofollow - https://avidynetraining.com/free-tools

I've never actually tried to download it from the public site, so I didn't know all that.  I'll see what I can do.

The link in a post from MysticCobra presents a form.

When I filled out the form, I got an email back inviting me to download the simulator for Apple. No mention of a PC sim. The email came from Jeff Wernli (and @avidyne.com email address).

I replied to that email stating I would like to download a PC simulator. Jeff replied, quoting "At this time our simulator only works with an ipad.", and the he is not aware of an older unit for a PC.

That seems quite inaccurate, but it came from @avidyne.com address.

Oh for Pete's sake, Avidyne, this is ridiculous.  Have you hidden away the PC simulator so well that even your employees can't find it anymore??

I just entered the userID and password that I was emailed back in the day, and it lands me on a page with download in install instructions for the v10.2 version of the simulator.  That's somewhat dated, but it's not ancient history.  The sim even includes IFD550 support.

If nobody at Avidyne even remembers that they made a PC sim then I despair of it ever being updated, but yes, it definitely exists.

Despite what top Avidyne mgmt might think, not everyone owns (or wants to own) an iPad.  Your PC simulator can be a compelling tool to drive customer interest.  Promote it and leverage it, for cryin' out loud!

I really wish this could become reality, but considering they don't even know they have a PC sim..

Sheesh!  I never said that I didn't know there was a sim.  I just have never tried to obtain it via the public site.  You're killin' me here!

The PC sim is not actually supported anymore.  So feel free to use it as long as you can get it (I won't alert the authorities that it's still accessible).  But don't call tech support if you can't get it to work with your PC configuration.

I don't think anyone ever accused you of that, but according to rototi:

Ugh...now, you're killin' me here!  This is very disappointing news.

Ah OK, well at least I understand the comment now :)  Wish I had better news for you.  You never know, we may find time to update it at some point, so don't completely give up hope.  It is a difficult one to support, though, since there are a virtually unlimited set of PC configurations out there.  You'd be surprised how many calls tech support has taken regarding that sim that end up being PC related.  All of those calls take time away from helping with actual IFD installation questions.

I find the sim on an iPad far more realistic. No need for a mouse, and the touch interface is exactly like the one on the real thing. Additionally, the iPad can be an extra screen in the plane with the use of the IFD-100 app that lets you control the IFD-440/540. The PC sim is indeed a fairly outdated way of trying out the functions of the unit.

Yes, but you have to have an iThingie. Personally I think that the excuse that there are "many" PC configurations is weak.

That said, I don't use any of the IFD simulators now. But, from a marketing standpoint there are far more new potential customers that use PCs, than iThingies.

if it was my development budget, I wouldn’t use it on a PC. At best, I might consider an Android version, but there really are a lot of variations to consider there too. The environment is not as controlled as for iOS. The PC experience just doesn’t represent the actual use of an IFD as well as a tablet does.

I think this discussion is probably moot, but there are plenty of Windows touchscreen devices out there.  I'm writing this post on one.

Don't believe the PC simulator is active anymore. You can get to the download link but it's a dead page after that. Appears the IPAD app is the only way to go.

Too bad they only support Apple, considering people choose Avidyne so they don't get locked into a closed ecosystem...

Yes, I guess that is a little ironic.

Would have been nice to still have the PC. I was reading instructions on the IPAD and tried to go back and forth to the sim. Every time I went back to the sim it would start from scratch whether I hit stop or not. Thankfully there are other workarounds.

If anyone still happens to have the old PC simulator, would appreciate if you'd consider sharing it through a personal message.

I tried to use the new iPad app but it seems to be marked as incompatible with my iPad 3, which I think is a mistake given the AppStore lists IOS 9 as a requirement, which iPad 3 runs. So frustrating, as I don't want to replace the iPad just because of the trainer app; it runs all EFB software I use just fine.

The PC simulator is stuck at an old version of the IFD software.  I suspect very few IFDs are still running that version, and there have been significant changes in the latest 10.2 and 10.3 versions released since the early 10.2 version the PC used.

You should beware the potential for negative training by using the PC sim.

I recently uninstalled the PC IFD Simulator from my computers. Before I did, I ran it for grins and was amazed at how different it was versus today's AviOS 10.3. I think the latest version of the PC IFD Simulator that I had was for AviOS 10.1. While it was very useful when I had AviOS 10.1, it would definitely be negative learning to train on that software today.
