Hi:

I am still scratching my head on the best way to use the FMS to add a VOR radial intercept at at given DME from the VOR...

Say:  Intercept the 150 radial TO at the 23 DME from XYZ...

What is the best/most efficient way to enter this in the IFD440's FMS?

Thanks!!

Doug

Create a user waypoint using the VOR radial and DME then hit direct to.

Personal comment here - as GPS becomes more prevelant, many of the basic skills are not being taught, or have become rusty from lack of use. Pilots are losing SA because of GPS.

What basic skills, understanding unique GUI interfaces?  I think there are less issues regarding how to use VOR/DME than there is trying to figure out how to apply it to a specific GPS.  If the FMS allowed you to add a Rad/Dist waypoint directly into the flight plan as requested several times, I doubt this question would have been asked.

Yes, that would be a solid addition, together with several other customary special entry waypoint forms, typical in FMSs ...

Crossing radials:
JFK190/CYN100

rad/dist:
JFK190/25

5nm before a waypoint (eg. HOPCE) already in the flightplan:
HOPCE/-5

lat/long, N 47.0, W 080.0
N470W0800

Not to put words in Gring's mouth, but I suspect his point was that you could just fly that intercept using DME distance as shown on the GPS plus good ol' VOR navigation-- a basic skill we're all supposed to have and maintain.
