I am using an IFD440 v10.2.

1.  Loaded the following flight plan 6B6 to IRGAW to KBVY.

2.  During the flight leg from IRGAW to KBVY I selected the RNAV-16 approach from IAF of COLLE.

3.  ATC had me at 2000 feet and gave me a direct to COLLE.  I selected COLLE from the route and entered direct.

4.  When I crossed COLLE the leg between COLLE and LADTI became active

5.  When I crossed LADTI I flew right through the approach on an easterly heading.

In the past it seemed that if I had a procedure entered and I went direct to a point on the procedure (COLLE IAF) the approach would activate.

Any thoughts?

Hi Jim,

I think more info is needed. Unless you loaded the approach as vectors to final, which you didn't, there isn't a need to activate the approach. As long as the approach was loaded, there wouldn't be a gap either. This suggests that maybe you are trying to address an issue with the autopilot where perhaps you were no longer getting gpss steering? Do you recall what the next waypoint was being indicated by the 440? Presumably ZINDU?

Good point, I have not eliminated the possibility that the problem was related to the autopilot although it was coupled and working well to the point it flew past the fix.  I cant remember the sequence as I had to correct the situation.

Let me ask another question.  Same scenario,

1. 6B6 to IRGAW

2. IRGAW to KBVY

3. Flying the 6B6 to IRGAW you enter in RNAV16 at KBVY with an IAF of COLLE

4. Without activating the approach the route from IRGAW to KBVY disappears and a GAP appears between IRGAW and COLLE.

Now if you active the approach it will fill in the gap or if you go direct to COLLE, but what if you are waiting for ATC to direct you with radar vectors or maybe a direct to LADTI as the IAF.

How do you call up the anticipated approach without blowing up the last leg of your routing.

Also is there a way to hide the SVS/MAP tabs on V10.2?

Thanks;  Jim

I recommend taking another pass through the user guide. The concept of activating the approach does not exist with the IFD series. When you selected your approach, you changed your active route, which is why your previous course line disappeared. The gap exists only because your route up to that point did not include a fix in the approach procedure, so your flight plan does not assume how you get from your last fix to COLLE. Try it out with the sim. Include COLLE in your route before selecting the approach. If you need to undo your change in flight, just remove the approach.

In terms of hiding tabs, I expect it is the same user setting as before. I'm waiting on getting 10.2 back from the factory, so I cannot confirm.

IFD page tabs can still be set to auto hide after varying delays with SW 10.2 just as in previous versions. The control is Hide Page Tab at the bottom of each of the 5 User Options. The page tabs can also be set to auto hide on the IFD100 through the User Options. I currently have them set to auto hide on my IFD540 running software 10.2.0 as well as my IFD100.

The description of this User Option is on pages 4-49 and 4-50 of the latest IFD540 Pilot Guide. I assume it is also described in a similar location with other IFDs.

AC,

I agree with you that the old Garmin way of activating an approach does not exist with the IFD the but the softkey to "Activate Approach" is still and an option when you select an approach.  The IFD will automatically active the approach if you hit one of the fixes.

I guess what I am asking is a little bit of a finesse question.  If you are flying to an airport and you want to get an approach lined up that you think they will give to you, I don't understand how to do it without disconnecting your last leg to the airport.

Thanks you for the comment.  Maybe I am looking at the wrong version manual but 4-49 AUX page seems to be GPS database.  10.2 IFD 440.  Maybe you are looking at the 5 Series manual.

If the next waypoint is the airport, and you add an approach, then it will create a second instance of the airport with the approach attached, and leave you still flying direct the original instance of the airport.

If the next waypoint is NOT the airport, it will open the last leg and add the approach. Presumably the last waypoint will be reasonably close to the airport, and you will have already been transitioned to the IAF or be vectored. If not, and you need guidance past the last waypoint, then you'd have to select the existing airport instance, and hit direct. OR, you could wait to add the approach until you are cleared the approach, it takes but a moment to do so.

Looks like it is one more pass through the user guide for me. There is in fact an activate approach button, but it only shows up if there is a gap in the route. I have been putting the IAF in my plan, so when I select the approach, there is no gap, and thus no activate approach button. I think the user guide says something about the activate approach button merely being a shortcut to closing the gap. Orest's post is also good information.
