Friends,

I am still learning to use my IFD540 and for the most part I think it's great. But I've had some strange experiences entering routes. Something is wrong, either with me or with the IFD. Maybe one of you can help.

Here's my desired route: KCCR, ECA, LHS, V459, SLI, V23, OCN, KCRQ. This is a very standard routing which I have flown hundreds of times over 20 years (pre Avidyne!) both VFR and IFR.

The segment of interest is between LHS and SLI on V459, which is basically a straight line over the Los Angeles basin. I enter the route from waypoint LHS, and selecting V459 as the exit, and then SLI as the exit from V459. But the IFD540 always changes this to LHS, V165, SLI. This route goes to the west over LAX and then turns east again to SLI, a routing I've never been given by ATC.

I have entered this route maybe 50 times trying everything I can think of.   But whatever I enter or however I enter it, the IFD540 always changes to V165. What am I doing wrong, or is it doing wrong? Any ideas would be welcome.

Maurice.

I just tried it in the simulator and it provided the desired routing.

I assume you are trying it in your installed unit.  Jepp database error perhaps?

Maurice,

I have flown the LHS to CRQ portion of this route at least 5 times with my IFD540 (although not for several months) and never had the issue you are describing.  I will try programming the route next time I go to my hangar to see if its a new issue with the database.

AzAv8r and Fritz, thanks for the replies.

Yes I have been doing this on my installed IFD540. I have also tried this route on the simulator and it gave me the desired routing.

This very well could be a data base error. I have only tried it on one data base release. I'll see if it has been corrected when I update.

Maurice.

Are you flying with 10.1.1.0?  Did you build the route on the route tab to be able to save the route?

One of the fixes in 10.1.1.0 was 16. Fixes a bug where stored routes could display an incorrect airway;

I can't seem to find it on the forums now, but I remember a forum post describing something very similar to what you are experiencing and that resulted in the #16 fix above.

Does the error occur if you build the route choosing Kimmo as the initial V459 exit point, and assuming that is accepted, then continuing on with V459 with SLI as a second exit?

I just entered this comple route on my IFD540 and it worked fine.  No issues.  Running the current version of the nav data.

All,

Thank you for your messages and experiments. To answer your questions:

Yes, I have tried several variations of the KIMMO idea, leaving V459 at an intersection and then continuing on it to SLI. It always enters just as I typed it, but then when the segment from LHS to SLI has been completely entered, it changes to V165, showing all the intersections along that route, and the intersections along V459 disappear. At least it's consistent!

No, I haven't yet upgraded to 10.1.1. I'm still using 10.1.0 which I had installed late last year when it came out. I'll get the 10.1.1 upgrade done right away.

Regards,
Maurice.
