I just tried to update the nav database on my IFD 540, but it doesn't seem to be recognizing the USB drive. I've tried a couple of devices, and the IFD doesn't know that a USB device is plugged in. It just boots normally, instead of going to the maintenance screen that allows you to select the database.

I believe there is an issue with the IFD's USB port. See this picture. It seems to be missing a small piece that holds the terminals in place. The port worked fine the last time I used it, and no-one else updates anything on it but me.

The image below is of a USB port in my car, to show the black plastic part holding the metal terminals/tabs that is not in the IFD connector.

What is the best way to get this repaired? Send it direct to Avidyne or look for a local dealer to sent the IFD in?

If I send it in for repair, am I guaranteed to get the same unit back? Will it be completely wiped, or is it likely to come back with all its settings intact?

Best way is to take it to a dealer and have them do it.  It will come back with the latest software.  But before you do that...

Try inserting the USB stick all the way and then backing it out ever so slightly until you can feel some friction on the contacts.  Then turn on the unit and see if it recognizes the presence of the USB stick.

I tried to do what you say, but it never saw the USB drive. I would want to get the socket fixed anyhow.

So I do get the specific unit I send in back, as opposed to some refurbished replacement, right?

Depends on whether you're willing to wait for your unit to be shipped in, repaired, and then returned.  That usually takes a couple of weeks.  There are exchange options where you would get a different IFD, but it would be a faster turnaround.  Your dealer would have the details.

OK. Thanks. I'm talking to pilotsupport@avidyne.com now. Maybe it would be a good time to upgrade to an IFD-500.
