Just wanted to ask the VNAV question.
Based on the webinars, I see that one can put vertical constraints on waypoints (cross @ 6000) etc. 
What prompting, or information does the IDF540 provide on these vertical constraints? 
Does it provide for a TOD indication or Vertical Speed Required field somewhere?

Yes, you can put vertical constraints on any of the waypoints (and that's easy).

And yes, the map will display a TOD marker (it's a green circle that is labeled "TOD").  In addition, an alert message will pop with with a 10ish second countdown timer and we plan to have a chime that can be optionally turned on/off.  Finally, you can set up the datablocks to display Vertical Speed Required if you'd like to see that digital readout.

Without having a performance model of the aircraft how can you do this? Are there menu selections the user can make to approximate a crude model? Will the flight path guidance be displayed on the CDI?

Will the DFC90 fly the VNAV portion of the flight plan if on GPSS?

Tony,

There is a default climb and descent rate that the system has to make the vertical movements.  These values are on a user-accessible setup page so if you prefer a different value to be used for a given airframe, you can make an alteration to the default value (and that changed value will persist across power cycles.).

I assume your question about flight path guidance on the CDI is meant to be the vertical glide slope indicator (VDI in Avidyne-speak).  If so, the answer is no.   In R9, where we have a VSI, we put a visual indicator to represent VSR but that is not applicable in the IFD540.  In this case, the datablock readout of VSR is your best bet.

Geoffrey,

Short answer = no.

Longer answer = The DFC100 has a VNAV mode but today's DFC90 does not.  Since today's DFC90 is taking nav (lateral and vertical) data from the on-board GPS/Nav/Com like the Garmin 430, there is no way to get that VNAV type info into the DFC90.   In other words, GPSS output data from 430 does not include any VNAV type info and therefore, today's DFC90 had no notion or knowledge of what to fly in that case.

Of course, the DFC90 does fly an extremely tight and accurate vertical profile when it can get that info, like on a LPV approach or ILS or VS/IAS modes.

I was asking in relation to the IFD540 which has much more detailed VNAV info for each waypoint, not a G product which only has a global VNAV profile.  However, from your response, I suspect the answer is still "not yet"?
