Fresh install of all three pieces of equipment.   All works great with ADS-B and weather but no traffic per se.  Sometimes we get some, most of the time not.  The 540 always displays, "ADS-B Degraded".   Not sure why we continue to get this error.  We have the RS-232 in/out (pin 55/54)port 4 from the IFD going to pins 5/24 on the Skytrax and pin 58 (port 2 out) from the 540 to pin 34 (GPS in) on the skytrax.  We have checked every pin, toned every wire and still cannot get it resolved. The comm set up is ADS-B G+ for pin 58 GPS out to the SkyTrax.  Any ideas?

(One last bit of info was we did pin 48/49 ARC429 from the 540 to 27/8 on the SkyTrax but there is nothing in the config of the 540 that would allow it to communication (Low / Off).

Do you see “ADS-B degraded” when you are on the ground? In my experience, that message occurs when you are not able to receive ADS-B ground stations, which is true at many airports on the surface, and sometimes even in the traffic pattern. Try it at altitude in an area known to have good ground station coverage.

Latest Rev of install manual does not use 429. Strictly RS232.

Tech support advised me that service bulletin 601-00000-004 exists to cover this exact ADS-B Degraded situation.  Contact your dealer/shop to have the work done.

The work needs to be done by an Avidyne authorized installer.  Your shop will have the bulletin.

Why wouldn't Avidyne make service bulletins available to all register owners?  If there is a problem that has been already addressed with a known solution, how are the registered owners going to know they can go to their authorized service center to get the problem taken care of?

I think service bulletins need to be made available to the owners as well as the service centers.  They used to be.  I respectfully request Avidyne reconsiders this positon and makes them public.

Or if there is a problem letting pilots read stuff, how about sending out a notice to all owners, or at least putting a notice on the website and this forum that a new SB (or any other documentation) has just been released - with advice to call your shop?

Avidyne isn't the only company that does this - L3 (the makers of the Lynx) don't tell owners about release of new SBs or software updates.  You find out through the grapevine.  Those two may not be the only ones. There may be some legal advice driving this, but if so, that same legal advice should warn against keeping pilots completely in the dark as well.

I agree.  Cessna sends me a notice whenever a new service bulletin is made available for my aircraft.  Why wouldn't an avionics manufacturer do the same?  Withholding information from the end user seems like it would garner much more liability.  Same with the install manuals.  Why as an owner of this product should I not have access to information that specifically pertains to how the product is to interfaced with other products I have in my panel or I may want to put in my panel in the future?  I wouldn't think installing and integrating avionics would be a trade secret.

Does Avidyne think that dealers will send out alerts to clients when there are bulletins?  I have never once been alerted of a bulletin through the dealer.
