I frequently fly into fields that are not in the IFD540 database (for instance, 30GA) and when I fly in the Bonanzas to Oshkosh trip we frequently fly low due to clouds cover the Oshkosh area.

I am sick-to-death of hearing "Terrain ahead pull up pull up" over and over in these situations. It's not useful, and in certain situations, it's very distracting, which can be dangerous in and of itself.

How can I turn this off?

I DO like the callouts at 500 feet on final and I LOVE the bell at the TOD on an approach.

The IFDs have a feature designed specifically for this purpose.  See "Designating a user waypoint as an airfield" in the Pilot's Guide.  In my copy of the IFD540 PG it's on 2-49.  I'll be the first to admit that it's a little hokey, but it gets the job done.  Maybe in a future version it will get a little less hokey...

Steve, thanks! That's helpful for individual airports.

What about all of the wind turbines and obstacles between Rockford, IL and Oshkosh, WI? That's where it really distracts me. I'm looking at my formation lead and never in the cockpit and I keep hearing (and have to ignore) "obstacle ahead, warning, obstacle ahead, warning".

As long as I'm asking... is there a way to get private airports in the IFD databases? Or is that just not supplied by Jeppesen? I can get them on ForeFlight.

You can't disable the alerts to the obstacles.  That's the whole reason for the function.  You might know they're there, but the IFD doesn't know that you know...

I've tried several times to get Jeppesen to just include all private airports, but have been unsuccessful so far.  They are pretty responsive, however, to individual requests as long as they have the source data.  Let me know what you would like to be added and I'll see what I can do.

FLTA alerts are inhibited if any of the following conditions are
met:
 FLTA is manually turned off via the pilot-accessible “User
Options” LSK on the “SETUP” tab of the AUX page
(generates a “FLTA OFF” CAS Advisory message);
 The ownship position is inside the rectangular (or circular,
in the case of no known runway orientation) FLTA Inhibitzone depicted on the 2D map (generates a “FLTA
INHIBITED” CAS Advisory message);
 The projected ground impact point along the current
ground track intersects the terrain inside that FLTA Inhibit
rectangle/circle (generates a “FLTA INHIBITED” CAS
Advisory message);
 The Reduced Terrain Clearance (RTC) violation is
projected to happen inside that FLTA Inhibit
rectangle/circle (generates a “FLTA INHIBITED” CAS
Advisory message).

FLTA can be turned off as per the IFD540 10.2.1 Pilot Guide page 3-34 (the text below is copied from that page)

FLTA alerts are inhibited if any of the following conditions are
met:
•     FLTA is manually turned off via the pilot-accessible “User Options” LSK on the “SETUP” tab of
the AUX page (generates a “FLTA OFF” CAS Advisory message);
•     The ownship position is inside the rectangular (or circular, in the case of no known runway
orientation) FLTA Inhibit zone depicted on the 2D map (generates a “FLTA INHIBITED” CAS Advisory
message);
•     The projected ground impact point along the current ground track intersects the terrain
inside that FLTA Inhibit rectangle/circle (generates a “FLTA INHIBITED” CAS Advisory message);
•     The Reduced Terrain Clearance (RTC) violation is projected to happen inside that FLTA Inhibit
rectangle/circle (generates a “FLTA INHIBITED” CAS Advisory message).

You can also install a switch to more easily enable and disable FTLA.  I had it installed for me when I upgraded my audio panel and love the dedicated switch.  I often get warnings while flying through mountain passes and some mountain airports while approaching the airport, but still about 3 miles out.  When I know the terrain and I'm looking right at it, the aural warning is nothing but distraction so I can now just flip the switch and quickly turn it off.  I have a step in my pre-flight to ensure the switch has FTLA enabled in case I forget to turn it back on after I land.

From the manual:
"An alternative means to inhibit the TAWS FLTA and PDA
functions is via an external switch that can be optionally installed
somewhere in the cockpit."

I fly an amphib, so I get the terrain & obstacle warnings all the time.  For lakes I land on regularly, I designate them as airport waypoints.  For other lakes, I just turn the volume down in the AUX-AUDIO Tab.  You can still hear it faintly in the background, but it is not distracting.  I considered a switch, but decided I could easily put that in later.  I could also connect it to an unused switched input on my audio panel.  But given that I can still hear it without it being distracting, I'm good for now.

Wow, Steve. You must have some stroke with Jeppesen!

How about: 11LL Thacker Airport, Chenoa, IL
