Lately I've been using the "Decoded VLOC IDENT" datablock to keep an eye on navaids that I'm using, and the behavior has been odd to say the least.  I can have a VOR tuned in, hear the morse code as clear as day, see the ID properly in the corner of the frequency box, but the datablock will will flicker between being populated with data and being totally blank.

I can't imagine it's actually deciding that it can/can't hear the morse code, since the data in the datablock will come and go multiple times within the timespan of one morse code broadcast from the VOR.  Please see the attached photo that shows the datablock blank, even though the frequency box has it correctly ID'd.

Any idea what's going on here?

Only a data point, but mine (IFD440) seems to require a really clear and pure signal to decode well. I can decode with my ears long before the radio will.

I figured this might be a factor of the radio needing to be really, really sure of what it's hearing. But.... ?

10.2 really improved decoding. Are you updated?

Yep I'm on 10.2.  The frequency box seems to ID quickly, but as I mentioned the datablock seems to spasm with the data coming and going much more frequently than the morse code would be cycling through.

Yep, take a look at the photo I attached.  You can see the datablock freaking out, despite the frequency box saying it was ID'd.

When it says "LIB" under the frequency does that mean it's identified the station? 

I'm thinking that based on proximity it's just getting that from the database that this identifier corresponds with that frequency. I think the only indication that it's identified it properly is the VOR/RAD/DIS datablock.

It's my understanding that the ID shown in the frequency box is confirmation that the station has been positively identified by the box decoding the Morse, the same as if you'd listened to the Morse yourself.  That's one of the handy features of the box.

That better not be the case, or I might as well lock my plane in the hangar and throw away the key.  The datablock couldn't properly ID a navaid even if I pointed to it out the window. :)
