When typing with the touch screen the visual entry box display is behind and under your hand so it is not possible to see if you make a mistake without moving your hand.... a bit of a pain but not even close to a deal breaker... I love my IFD 540 and would think that it would only be better if the display window were moved to a position above the touch screen keyboard.

I use the keyboard when i have a lot to enter, but if it is a single entry or two, i don't bother getting it out and setting it up.

I don't have lots of real estate in the Mooney ... nowhere to mount the BT keyboard so in a turbulent situation it would be difficult to use.

I mounted it on a simple bent aluminum support, on my yoke.  80% of my interaction with the IFD is by keyboard, with 10.2 that will be over 90% I'm sure. It is much easier to use it in turbulence, because your palm is supported. The positive click of the chiclet keys is also much superior to interacting with a solid touch screen virtual keyboard. I like your setup I Orest, but like 77Mooney, I have a tablet mounted to my yoke. I have a custom center console tha I have thought about mounting it to, but I'm waiting until after 10.2 so I can figure out how I'll use the ifd100 - I may want to mount a dedicated ifd100 tablet there instead. Unfortunately I'll probably have to wait even longer since I'm on android. With the ifd100 on the center console and my arm/wrist supported on the armrest, I think I wouldn't need the bt keyboard.

I do use the ashtray... when opened it has a pencil sharpener inside and the tray catches the shavings... I see your point on that location but it is a bit far away and the wrong angle for such a small keyboard however one could make a angled mount... I will have to give it some thought. If only they would release 10.2 then the iPad on the yoke will be perfect.

I would like to poke fun, but I can't. In fact in my airplane I have redundant pencils. I have the regular pencil, and I have a #2 pencil.
I have found that a sharpened pencil only stays sharp briefly, but a "dull" or rounded pencil holds its condition forever. If you don't need razor-thin lines in your writing, an unsharpened pencil can be good for years. Just shave back the wood and expose the graphite. As you write, the graphite tip becomes rounded. Then it stays that way for a long time, because there is a tendency to rotate the pencil while writing. Also, the rounded tip is more robust and never breaks off. David Bunin |

I rarely use the sharpener and as you said the dull pencil will last a long long time however I like to have it just in case ... and just why I don't know...lol.... I keep a few pencils and pens in my kneeboard and a few more in my flight bag.......should probably just let it go...

I'm as computer geekie as they come but, absolutely, pencil to paper for notes. I have a paper TOLD sheet and keep a cruise diary as well. My tablet works pretty well with a stylus, although not as well nor as fast as a sharp pencil and paper, and a tablet is far more likely to fail. I keep a mini sharpener and spare pencils in my flight bag, and I'm good. * Orest |

Very much agree with the pencil and paper technique. Every single frequency change is first put on paper before I enter in the radio and switch freqs. In the event of a sudden electrical failure, I have the frequency written down and can quickly enter it into my handheld.
