Will the MLB100 ADS-B receiver be compatible with the EX5000C? (I am assuming yes from the press releases).
If yes to the above, will there also be compatibility with existing XM Weather and Skywatch systems or will it be either/or decision? In other words, will operators be able to keep the existing XM and Traffic on the EX500C and add the TIS-B and FIS-B with the MLB100? |

I Have a Avidyne EX5000 in a 2005 Corvalis and I have just installed a Garmin GTX 345. The installer advised me that Avidyne is currently working on making adjustments to the EX 5000 software to be able to fully talk to the GTX 345 can you advise when this will be available?

Well we just got a GTX345 ourselves to use for integration testing - so far, no success but it's still early.
However, Release 8.2 is focused on the Avidyne supplied ADS-B devices since those are what we know and those are under our control to ensure we have full access to the data protocols and that they won't change. Therefore, I would not count on Rel 8.2 supporting the GTX345 at this time.

When do you expect Rel 8.2? We just installed IFD440 and Skytrax 100, looking forward to having traffic and weather on the EX5000

Steve/Simpson, I hope it is not as lengthy as the 10.2 as it is only a software update not associated with new hardware certification. |

I won't speculate a timeframe for approval of 8.2. I will share that it is currently in the top priorities of the in-progress projects. We are well into the stage of creating the software for the release, reviewing the requirements and initial testing.
It is a totally different beast than 10.2 was. There are no hardware components to it, however, that doesn't mean it is necessarily easier.

You guys know we want this, but no one wants you to make promises you can't keep on dates, particularly when at least one major milestone is not under your direct control.
If there is anything those of us with EX5000s can do to help test, please don't hesitate to ask. |

I am not as concerned with the schedule for 8.2, as I am what it *will* accomplish.
Can you tell me, since the message structure is more or less standard, will it likewise support the Garmin 345 and the Lynx NGT9000+ ??? I do not want to have to hot-glue an iPad to my windshield, just to get traffic details (ADS-B) from the 345. <G> tnx, jmk |

Steve/Simpson, The whole reason we invested a lot of money last July in the Avidyne IFD 440/AXP340/Skytrax 100 was to get traffic on the EX5000. Avidyne has been promoting the MLB 100 which in now Skytrax 100 for the last couple of years as compatible with the EX5000. Thanks

We've just about wrapped up the development and have begun flying and lab testing beta versions. Should those go well and we only need to make a few tweaks, then we should be in the final stretch. Best guestimate is September.

It's possible traffic might work but there will likely be no documented support for the 345.

Thank you for the quick reply. I'm assuming this also means no graphical weather or METARs as well? I bet there is significant market for this integration if it is technically feasible, but it's completely understandable if it isn't; after all these displays are more than a decade old at this point.

Why does your website list the EX- series MFD compatible with the Skytrax when it is not yet?ADS-B SkyTrax100Avidyne’s ADS-B SkyTrax100 provides affordable ADS-B solutions for general aviation aircraft equipped with Avidyne IFD440/540 systems and EX-Series MFDs*. http://www.avidyne.com/products/978/index.html |

The 8.2 Release will not be available, that "guestimate" was ambitious. We are planning for it to be available in Q4 2017. "*Depending on your display configuration. Contact Avidyne for more information, as the list of approved displays is currently being expanded via certification." The above is the 8.2 certification we are working on. |

This was the reason we got the Skytrax/MLB 100 July 2016 to get traffic on the MFD, now you are saying Q4 2017, hopefully this guestimate will come true. |

Your hope level should be unchanged, because the product that requires updating was (and is) the EX series display, not the data receiver. David

Breaking news, Avidyne press release, 3 years in the making and still waiting. The only update is the name change to Skytrax 100

Hello Simpson
I guess Q4 2017 estimate for revision 8.2 did not happen. The whole reason for installing the Skytrax was to have traffic on the EX5000 MFD. If for some reason there are some technical or certification issues that would make it impossible to have that happen, please let us know so we can explore other options that would display traffic on the MFD such as L3 Skywatch traffic. Hope the new year brings joy and much awaited updates

Quick is relative. At this point I would have April (Sun N Fun) in mind. If Avidyne is doing for-credit test flights now, it means the final data package has not yet been submitted for approval (since the results of the test flights are a required data report in the submission).
When an applicant submits a data package, the FAA has their standard interval to review it. That is usually 60 days for minor changes and 90 days for major changes. Before the FAA's review interval expires, one of two things is supposed to happen; either they approve the data as-submitted, or they ask the applicant a question about it. If they ask a question, then the applicant has as long as he wants to respond. (The applicant usually is very motivated to respond quickly.) Then a new review 60-90-day clock starts at the FAA for the response that was submitted. Since the applicant never knows if or how many times the FAA will ask for more information, he never really knows how long the approval process will take. You get these "in a perfect world, 60 days" kind of answers, but then people latch on to that thinking it is a knowable thing. |

From your timeline sequence description, David, I would say that April (Sun n Fun) sits in the "in a perfect world" category.
From the perspective of a customer awaiting delivery, I would suggest that end of Q2 (June 30) is a more reasonable expectation and if everything goes perfectly a slightly earlier date is possible. From the time A has FAA approval in hand, there is also a delay until users can implement although in this case that should be relatively short since it appears to be mostly a piece of paper (STC, svc doc, manual update?) that needs to get into users/installers hands.

As you know we currently use service providers to provide service to our MFD and PFD products. We are conducting a survey and would like your feedback in an effort to improve those services. If you've used Extant or Duncan please complete the following survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/aviservice. If you've had more than one service interaction please complete multiple surveys. Thank you.
