We have previously had our portable G396 wired into our GNS430 for autofill of flight plan information. This is not possible with the R9?

Carol,
You are correct. Release 9 was built as a clean sheet design and intended to be an integrated flight deck. Currently, there are very limited and specific GPS outputs that are intended for sensors (specifically traffic and lightning detection). We have considered making more generic GPS feeds available but they are not in the present software.
