Top and away from antennas (Satellites are above the airplane).

If you have a fiberglass (or plastic) forward vert stab fairing, hide it right in the vertical stabilizer. It will reduce drag and the slow wind damage to the antenna and perhaps even protect the antenna a little better should you have an impact. If your airplane originally had an ADF antenna, there will be a hole on the top of the fuselage about a foot aft of the windshield. I used this location for mine (Cessna 172). It is offset to the right just enough to be clear of the cabin speaker.
You can also use the flat spot on the turtledeck aft of the rear window, opposite the ELT antenna. David Bunin |

For What It Is Worth!
There is considerable detail given in the FAA Approved Installation Manual. Has to do with avoiding the center line, minimum spacing between antennas, and avoiding shadowing of the antenna as much as practical The FAA approved guidance has changed a lot in the last couple of years. The guidance when your Garmin 430 or 530 was installed has now changed as well. If you want the installation to be legal, follow the guidance in a current install manual. Incidentally, get too close to the windshield and you might get interference from static build up on the windshield. Happy Skies, Old Bob
