I made a deposit on the IFD540 and therefore do not want to install equipment which might not be compatible. I am thinking of installing the GDL88 from Garmin (I have the GTX330 expounder). Is the GDL88 fully compatible with the IFD540 display?

Thank you very much for the IFD540 deposit - it's going to be a great product.

At this point, we have no idea if the GDL88 is compatible.  We have not seen the specs of the GDL88 and therefore can not make an informed statement about its compatibility.  I'm not sure that state will change anytime soon.

The IFD540 is not GDL88 compatible.

Avidyne does have an ADS-B In and an ADS-B Out set of solutions/products that are compatible with the IFD540.

The Avidyne AXP340 Mode S ADS-B Out Transponder will transmit your ADS-B relevant data out into the ether for anyone to use/receive.   The transponder is already certified and many folks have it installed.  The STC that enables recognized ADS-B compliance is going through final stages with the FAA and *should* be available by the end of Jan timeframe.

The Avidyne MLB100 ADS-B In Receiver will receive 1090 MHz ADS-B data (weather and traffic) and display that data on the IFD540 as part of Release 10.1 which is a springtime release.  The availability of the MLB100 hardware is being timed to coincide with the springtime Rel 10.1 date.

I believe you meant 978 Mhz (UAT), there is no weather on 1090 MHz. Just so it doesn't confuse anyone ...

Steve:

Is that protocol proprietary (the MLB100) or will it also display on Aspens?

Happy new year.

Reference Orest's correction - yup.  Must have been still feeling the lingering effects of New Year's Eve "celebrations" when I wrote that.      Here is a slightly more complete description of that product:

Using the 978MHz datalink frequency band (which is one of two channels available to pilots in the United States airspace for ADS-B) the MLB100 receives Flight Information System-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather information, including NEXRAD radar, METARs,TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, Special Use Airspace (SUA), and Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs). The MLB100 also receives traffic information directly from nearby 978MHz-equipped aircraft, and indirectly through the rebroadcast of 1090MHz-equipped aircraft via 978MHz ADS-R. Traffic information from aircraft not participating in ADS-B is received from ground stations via 978MHz TIS-B transmissions (Traffic Information Service-Broadcast).

Reference David's question about proprietary interfaces - no, we are not using any proprietary interfaces in that unit so anyone like Aspen who wants to use the interface control document that we'll publish will be free to do so.

In some ways, I would prefer to use UAT for the ADSB-out because of its available "anonymous" mode.  Avidyne have anything in the works for this?

This is the main appeal of the GDL88, apart from also having an integral GPS unit.
