I have recently ordered an IFD440 to replace my non-WAAS GNS430 in my Partenavia P68C-TC. I am about to buy an iPad to run the IFD100 app, the IFD440 Simulator and the 10.2 Trainer app. I will be also be loading the Jepp World Wide IFR Nav Data, World Wide
Terrain and Oceania Terrain along with my IFR flight planning software etc.
Being new to iPads, I need some advice re model and memory. Here in New Zealand, an iPad Pro 9.7" with 128 GB costs USD 780. For USD 105 more, I get 256 GB. Or, do I opt for the basic iPad 9.7", 128 GB, at USD 475 ? I noted AviJake's comment on 16 April 2016 that the IFD100 app "is a bit of a memory and processing hog". I'm tempted to go with an iPad Pro 9.7" with 256 GB but maybe that's overkill ? |

Any of those will work. Over time, software always gets bigger and more complex. That's why computers always get slower as they age. (Unlike us, the computer doesn't actually slow down as it gets old, the software just expands.)
So any ipad will work great/fine today. The best ipad will work well for the longest time into the future. In other words, you aren't really paying more for capability. You are paying for length of service. |

I can't say for New Zealand but in the US I would recommend against the 32G models because you'll run out of memory if you try to put on everything.
Any of the others should be fine. The Pro has a brighter screen and an anti-glare coating but I don't know if that really matters. My old iPad doesn't have it but I'm replacing it next month because it doesn't have enough memory to hold all of the IFD software and ForeFlight. |

Thank you DavidBunin and Paul for your helpful comments. I'm going to go ahead with an iPad Pro, 9.7", 256 GB.
Next will be the mounting of it in the cockpit: the Pivot case - complete with suction mount - from Flyboys or Sportys looks a good option particularly as it has been selected by several airlines such as South West. Have any Avidyne Live Members had any experience - good or bad - re Pivot cases and / or mounts ? |

I know a couple of Southwest pilots, and as far as I know they are happy with the system they use.
I don't have my iPad mounted in the airplane. I use it the way I always used a paper chart. Before flight, I put it in the side/map pocket by my knee. I pull it out to look at it, and I put it back. |

I use a mount from http://www.ipadyokemounts.com/. It puts the ipad right in front of me without blocking the instrument panel, well at least that's the case in my Cessna 182. The mounts are specifically made for individual make, model and year, so you may not find one for your aircraft, but if there is one I'd recommend it. |

I have an 8.4" Samsung tablet, and use a RAM X-grip mount. It puts my tablet right in front of me without blocking the instrument panel, but it's not unique to any particular tablet form factor. I actually have two tablets that I sometimes use with very different shapes, and it's nice that it will hold both equally well. I'm sure it'll hold whatever my next tablet is, too.
