I noticed that in both the self install documentation and the IFD installation manual, the GA56 non-WAAS antenna is specifically not permitted. That's the standard antenna that comes with the 430 navigator.

If I wanted to try replacing a standard 430 with an IFD 440, presumably I would want to just plug in the IFD to the existing antenna, understanding of course that it would not be able to do WAAS. This prohibition though suggests that it won't work at all, which would mean changing the antenna, which in turn requires an avionics installer, something that defeats the idea of Self Install.

Can you clarify if the GA56 antenna doesn't work at all with an IFD, or if it just works without benefit of WAAS reception?

It does not work. I has to do with the gain structure of the antenna.
