Are there any Cessna 172 owners out there who have at least one IFD540 in their airplane and are interested in equipping their plane with some additional equipment that enables cockpit connectivity?

I know that wasn't very rich in details but it's an interesting little project we're trying to pull off for Oshkosh so if you're at all intrigued and have that type of airplane, please contact me pronto for some more details.

I have C-172, but it is HIGHLY modified to look exactly like a Mooney!  You are free to put anything in all the great toys you like - and I do plan to fly to OSH this year :)

I already have a 540, 340, 240, MLB100 combo.

Only a C172?

Very puzzling. Maybe even intriguing.

How 'bout a 182? And it's based near KOSH already.

We've got one.  There are photos of the panel in this forum.  I'll send you e-mail.

Hello Steve.  I seemed to have talked to everyone at Avidyne except for you in my Avidyne adventure over the last year.  I have a 1976 M model C172.   Gulf Coast Avionics redid my panel last April. We installed an Avidyne IFD540, AXP340, PS Engineering PMA450, Aspen 1000 Pro PFD, S-Tec System 30 Autopilot, JPI EDM900 engine monitor, and a Garmin GNC255A only because Avidyne doesn't make a stand alone Nav/Comm.

Since then we have had Aircraft Specialist at KJVY, only 30 miles from here, handle all of the warranty work.  Last week we had the plane in for the 10.1.2 update and added audio connectivity from the IFD540 to the PMA450 for audio alerts.  When we did the initial install, the MLB100 was not certified but GCA obtained the specs from Avidyne and wired for it anyway.  We found out later that the wiring diagram was not correct and while it was in the shop for the above work, they ran those cables correctly for when I can afford the MLB100.

As you can see in the picture below, I run 2 iPads with a Stratus II mounted in the rear under the baggage bin.  Since this picture, I have replaced the iPad mini on the left with an iPad Pro 9.7.  When 10.2 is released, I hope to install the MLB100 at the same time and add my iPad mini on the right side of the panel for my wife to have her own IFD display.  During the panel build I had RAM mounting balls mounted in all four corners of the panel and use them for the iPads.  I also had extra power ports installed as well as an audio input on the left side behind the iPad for the audio alerts  from Foreflight.  While I was at it I added panel mounted power for the Lightspeed Zulu PFX headsets.

I retired from the FAA as a 27 year air traffic controller at KSDF approach recently.  As soon as I retired I bought the airplane.  Soon after, I did the panel upgrade and spent a couple of months getting used to the new panel.  Then I took the airplane and went to an accelerated IFR program and obtained my instrument rating.

Bottom line is that I am most interested in your program.  I love the IFD540 and spent many months researching the equipment that I wanted, designing the panel, and choosing a vendor to install it.  The IFD540, S-Tec 30, and Aspen combination is awesome and creates a fabulous single pilot IFR platform.  I rave about you guys over on the Cessna 172 Club forum and have something of a rivalry going with the Garmin guys there.  I think I'm winning, especially with 10.2 on the way.  I am always interested in pushing the boundaries of technology.  I have a fairly extensive hardware and software background because in my spare time over the last 17 years I have also been a partner in a software company here i KY. We write tax collection software and lease that software and hardware to government agencies.  We generate the tax rolls and print the tax bills also.

Is tomorrow too soon for me to bring my airplane to you?

Sounds like you have a viable candidate already.  I do have a 172 with the IFD-540 installed (presently running 10.1.2.0 software) and the UAT (whatever you are calling it now) in the rear equipment shelf.

I fly with an iPad running Foreflight, but I don't use the iPad much in the airplane.  I take it out to look at it, and I put it back in the side pocket (where I used to put my chart in the old days).

I am planning to take my airplane to Oshkosh this year.

I should probably mention that my airplane is a 1977 model R172K, which is the Hawk XP.  Not the same Type Certificate as the regular 172 if that makes a difference to you.  The Hawk XP is on a different TC with the P172 and 175 and 172RG.

That's why you see a cowl flap control next to the hand mic in my picture.

What I wouldn't give for some cowl flaps...constant speed prop, 180 hp...the list goes on.  After the new panel install, I suddenly discovered that we had a cooling issue.  I was blissfully ignorant until the new JPI900 kept showing the temps climbing into the yellow and red.  I finally got most of it under control with new baffle seals and addressing all the holes in the baffles.

There are times when I wish we had cowl flaps, a bigger engine, retractable gear, and maybe a turbine.  Then it comes time for the annual and I'm glad we don't have any of that stuff.

The IFD 540 is an excellent choice for a Cessna 172...

We did get a lot of interest, despite the lack of supplied details.   It turns out we backed away from our plan to try and modify an airplane and bring it to Oshkosh.

So, potential fire drill is no more.

We will bring some really neat stuff to Oshkosh but modifying a customer 172 is not in the cards for this show.   Thank you to all the potential volunteers.

Hi Steve. I have a 1976 172M. Since I bought the plane I have added the IFD540, AXP340 and AMX240. I am sole owner of my plane but now have three instructors renting the plane for instruction in addition to myself flying it.

I am very interested in what you have to offer. I communicate with Christina Evans regularly since I had some installation issues and she can give you some background. I do love the great dialogue and customer support of Avidyne and as you can tell you have my loyalty as a customer both for the great products and the company's market position and mission.

If you feel I am a good candidate for what you are looking for please let me know. If not for Oshkosh, for any future collaboration or testing. Thank You.

Thanks Gerald.

We decided not to try and modify a 172 for Oshkosh so it was just a false alarm.
