The 540 won't autosequence to the next approach. You have to go to the FPL page, find the appropriate VTF leg, and activate it. The PROC key always adds approaches, it never activates an existing one.

The "Autosequence on Miss" setting that you have turned on makes the 540 automatically start the published miss after you pass the missed approach point. Once the miss is started, the 540 only knows to fly the published procedure. 

If a controller gives you something different (which happens most of the time), you have to steer the airplane yourself until you have a free hand and brain to tell the 540 what to do next. That's why autopilots are handy when you're working with an FMS like the 540. You have to figure out what you want to do, program it into the  FMS, and activate the right leg or waypoint. There's nothing automatic about it.

You're right, you can't fly headings with the simulator. But you can practice a lot of scenarios and what-ifs, just like this one. Whether you're on the published miss or flying a vector after the MAP is irrelevant from the standpoint of programming the next approach.

Yes, the PROC button is used to build a flight plan, not to execute it once it's built.  To move to a different part of the flight plan, use the FMS tab and select your desired waypoint or approach segment there as mfb described in an earlier reply.

The flight plan went in prior to launching the flight, and quite easily, I might add. It was the moving forward in the flight plan that I was unable to accomplish in the air. I tried selecting VFT for the next approach after going missed on the first (the missed did NOT follow the published missed because ATC gave me an alternate missed due to traffic) but the device did not sequence to the next approach. I also tried selecting the next segment on the approach after VTF, but that also did not make the IFD move forward. It was still expecting me to 'miss'. I do have 'autosequence on missed turned on'. It's tough to do on the Sim because you cannot really control aircraft flight path (headings) to actually simulate that sequence.

The planned flight had VTFs on each additional approach and direct to the IAF on the first one as that was my expectation from ATC. I thought that selecting VTF would be the way to do it. It was all there in the FPL page, I just couldn't get it to sequence on the first missed. It all worked correctly thereafter.

By the way, selecting PROC wants to insert another procedure (or replace the current one) rather than move forward to an existing one in the FPL. I'll try it again on another practice day.

I just ran your scenario in the sim. 

It's a little tricky because your initial flight plan is KPOV KPOV 1G3 KPOV. You have three instances of KPOV, two of them as destinations. You can associate a different approach with each instance of destination KPOV but you have to be careful you get the right approach on the right destination. It's easy to see the approach selected if you look at the App box on each destination airport on the FPL page. (You can also click there to set up the approach, instead of using the PROC key.)

I put a VTF on each approach and found I could activate each VTF separately. No problem.

You don't need to delete the old approach. You can put two (or more) destinations in your flight plan. Each time you press the PROC button the list of approaches will sequence between each of the destinations.

So, when you do a miss, add the new destination to the end of the flight plan. (Or put it there before you ever take off.) Press the PROC button until approaches for the new destination are displayed and select one of them and its appropriate transition. The new approach will be added to your flight plan, associated with the new destination.

Then go direct to one of the waypoints on the new approach, activate one of the approach's legs, or activate vectors-to-final for the approach.

Practice this in the simulator before you fly. It takes a while to figure it out and get comfortable with the button-pushing.

I was flying actual IFR practice approaches this past weekend and successfully flight planned a round robin to KPOV with an intermediate 1G3 with approaches starting with a departure from KPOV and the RNAV 27 back to KPOV, then the RNAV 19 to 1G3 and back to KPOV with RNAV 27. I love this feature - are you listening Garmin?

When I 'missed' the first approach and was vectored (not following the published missed) to join the next approach (RNAV 19 1G3), I was unable to figure out how to sequence to that approach. I tried to activate the appropriate leg, activate the approach, delete the previous missed procedure (RNAV 27), choose PROC and load the RNAV 19 1G3 approach again, all to no avail.

How should I have made the transition from the unpublished missed at KPOV to the vectors at 1G3's RNAV 19?
