For whatever reason both the 540 and 440 radio reception quality has noticeably deteriorated after a magneto repair. I had a problem with the tower frequency 118.10 as I did not hear them when they called me. The reception was random so Zürich tower sent me back to the parking position as I was holding up the commercial operations. all other frequencies were ok.
I taxied back but didn't want to give in so I tried another headset and now I was able to hear the tower again. I convinced them that I had resolved the issue and asked to depart and reluctantly they let me go. All seemed ok but shortly after taking off the reception started to deteriorate. I was getting all calls but there was a rattling that was getting stronger the farther I was getting. When they allowed the frequency change I was barely able to read them. I never had this issue before. I have had a bad magneto which was repaired and now I have this radio issue. Could there be a connection between the two things? What can I do to resolve the problem? Thanks for your help. Placido |

Yes, it COULD be related. Aviation spark plug wires are shielded to reduce interference from the sparks created by the magnetos. If the shielding was not properly re-connected or the wiring updated if deteriorated, then it could result in interference into the aviation AM radio reception

Additionally - To check to see if there is a problem, have someone take a hand-held aircraft radio and stand beside the aircraft as it is started. (Keep out of the propeller arc!!) What are the results on the hand-held? If loud static is detected by the hand-held, further trouble-shooting can be done by having your mechanic take the handheld and see where the loudest static occurs in the engine area. That might be a source of the problem.
